Yes it will do to catalyst system. It will stop up with carbon and can't breath. You should be able to clean it. You may just have broken or cracked vacuum lines.

SOURCE: Fuel leaking from vapor canister

Hi, sounds like your system is not purging properly. Check the hose leading from the cannister to to the engine intake manifold. It should have vacuum on it when the engine is running. If there is a valve (I don't see one for your car), make sure it opens properly when the engine is up to operating temperature. Clean any valve as well as the hose if it is clogged. Check the vacuum source at the intake manifold for clogging as well. Please let me know if you have questions, and thanks for using Fixya.

SOURCE: vapor canister 2003 cadillac cts

it will look something like this:
1_10_2012_5_20_27_pm.jpgand is usually located on the fender well on the engine side toward the front corner of the car (it may be inside the fender itself)
there would be 2-3 large vacuum hoses going to it which will help in finding it.

Im getting a P0441 EVAP emission control system purge flow fault code on my 2002 hyundia elantra. im guessing a good start would be to blow out the lines and replace the vacuum switch? where are they?

P0441 : Evap. Emission System Incorrect Purge Flow

General Description
The evaporative emission control system prevents hydrocarbon (HC) vapors from the fuel tank from escaping into the atmosphere where they could form photochemical smog. Gasoline vapors are collected in the charcoal canister. The ECM controls the Purge Control Solenoid Valve (PCSV) to purge any collected vapors from the canister back to the engine for combustlon. This valve is actuated by the purge control signal from the PCM and controls fuel vapor from the canister to the intake manifold.
Possible Cause : ● Leakage on hose to PCSV ● Defective PCSV
