SOURCE: pontiac sunfire

I had that problem last year. I bought a new starter but it was not the correct one for my car. For the 98 there are two different starters. I bought the wrong one the first time. My step father started to put it one and realized it was not the same as the one he just pulled off. Ending up taking it with us when we returned the orginial one I bought. The orginial one I bought was about $70 the correct one was $400. The auto store did not have the correct one listed as a replacement part. Until the number off of the part was keyed into the system and found out that it was just not the common replacement part.

SOURCE: 1998 sunfire ran for while after changing starter shut it off now it won't start

Check THEFT light on in dashboard, if YES, check disarm procedure in the Owners MAnual.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

I have a 1998 Pontiac Sunfire with the 2.2l and I cannot figure out how to wire the starter up. This is a picture of the starter in the car now, can anyone give me advice?

The larger terminal goes straight to the battery. It looks like it does have a battery cable on it though. The smaller terminal bolt appears to have no wire on it. This is the one that switches on the starter. It should go to a solenoid or electronic box. But there has to be a wire on it going to the ignition system.

Can a starter from a 2002 sunfire fit a 1998 sunfire

Chuck, if the 2002 and 1998 Sunfires have the same engines, the starters are interchangeable.

( 1998 Pontiac sunfire ) Is it possible just to remove the vtd on a 1998 pontiac sunfire and how can I find out if it does have the vtd on this 1998 pontiac sunfire ...car is not starting ...ruled out...

Security light lit on the instrument cluster ? It should have anti-theft system . No , can't just remove it . It has componets - key lock cylinder housing , software programmed into control modules etc... If you just removed or disconnected the pass lock sensor the pcm -engine computer would not see a coded message ,so it would disable fuel injectors an maybe starter . Your best bet ,have a qualified repair shop diagnose it .

Starter Hitting Flywheel

It sounds alot like a faulty ignition switch rather than a starter. The starter should never kick before moving to the start position.

When you say it will not turn over, i think you mean that the starter does not turn???
Re check the starter connection, attention to the starter solenoid wiring. Good luck
