The only secret caution...
(besides not dropping the whole greasy mess on your head)...
To make sure the torque converter is fully and properly seated (FULLY) inside the front pump gear... and ABSOLUTELY must stay seated while your are bouncing and wiggling everything around to get that TRANNY fully bolted to the engine...
Bolt the starter drive gear to the torque converter last...
and yes a big ugly felt marker to help with that final alignment would be SMART.
(oh yeah... know ALL your torque specs).

A manual will have pictures and everything.
Just replaced mine. Five bolts in bracket holding tension idler, A/C
compressor (if applicable) and power steering pump must be removed to
access 3 bolts in water pump. Just push aside enough to access
remaining bolts. Email at [email protected] if additional info is
needed. Also, diagram serpentine belt before removing. Took me at least
15 attempts and 20 minutes to figure out

Okay...here is a list since no motor size:
2.5L----- 56-64
3.0L----- 56-64
4.0L----- 59
5.0L----- 75-85
All in ft lbs.......this is for the flywheel.
SOURCE: spark plug gap spec. for 1997 ford ranger/4.0 liter
for the most part it is under the hood of your car where the sticker say engine size try this website to see if they have you car listed its www.autozone.com if not call your local part store and tell them its a 4.0 liter and you need the gap on the spark plugs
SOURCE: need cylinder head gasket torque specs.
looks like there is special sequence to reassemble and tightening, a quick note replace any bolts that have two punch marks.tighten as follows: x x x x x 10 4 2 6 8 x x x x x 7 5 1 3 9 torque all down to 15 ft lbs torque to 30 ft lbs plus 90 degrees. Good luck!

Hi Paul Roach, I want to help you with your question, but I need more information from you. Can you please add details in the comment box? How do you know that you torque converter is bad? Also have you pulled the pan off the bottom of transmission to see if there are metal flakes?
