You need to scan the computer for fault codes, this requires a OBD2 code reader tool, you can borrow or rent one from most chain auto parts stores.

That did the trick, I kind of thought it had something to do with security. Didn't know how to check. You were a big help, thanks. So she will have ongoing issues with the security system.

SOURCE: our oldsmobile alero wont start seems like not getting fuel

If the security light is flashing when the key is on then it is the passport 2 anti-theft system. You need to turn the key to the on position (one away from cranking it over) and leave it until the light goes out. Then turn the key off, remove it, then try to restart it.

Check for fuses/power/ground to the engine computer (or injector drive computer) whatever the case is.

Spark, fuel pump, and starter all are independant of the fuel injection computer.

Either the computer itself has gone bad, or it is not receiving power or ground, or wiring to the injectors might be bad...

SOURCE: Where is the fuel pressure regulator on a 2003 oldsmobile alero?

There are 2 fuel lines connecting to the fuel injector rail. The larger line is the pressure line and the smaller line is the return line. The smaller line attaches to the fuel pressure regulator. You will notice that the regulator also has a vacuum line attached to it. If you are planning on changing it your self, let me know. There is a specific way to change it for safety reasons.
Let me know.

here are step by step instructions on the removal and installation of your fuel tank and fuel pump. please do not forget to rate and comment about your experience with fixya today.
Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  3. Drain the fuel tank.
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:
  5. While holding the modular fuel sender assembly down, remove the snapring, if equipped or if equipped with a cam lock ring use Fuel Sender Lock Nut Tool J-39765 to press down and rotate the cam lock ring to remove it.

WARNING If the modular fuel sender assembly is retained by a snapring, it may spring up from its position. When removing the modular fuel sender from the tank, be aware that the reservoir bucket is full of fuel. It must be tipped slightly during removal to avoid damage to the float.
    • Fuel sender assembly
    • External fuel strainer
    • Connector retainer from the wiring harness and the fuel pump
  6. Gently release the tabs on the sides of the fuel sender at the cover assembly. Begin by squeezing the sides of the reservoir and releasing the tab opposite the fuel level sensor. Move clockwise to release the second and third tab in the same manner.
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Fuel pump electrical connection by lifting the cover assembly
    • Baffle and pump assembly from the retainer by rotating the fuel pump baffle counterclockwise
    • Fuel pump outlet by sliding it out of slot
    • Fuel pump outlet seal
To install:
Install or connect the following:
    • Fuel pump outlet with a new seal by sliding it in the reservoir cover slots
    • Fuel pump and baffle assembly onto the reservoir retainer by rotating it clockwise until seated
    • Lower retainer assembly partially into the reservoir by aligning all 3 sleeve tabs and pressing the retainer onto the reservoir making sure all 3 tabs are firmly seated

NOTE Gently pull on the fuel pump reservoir to assure it is secure. If not secure, replace the entire fuel sender.
    • Connector retainer to the wiring harness and the fuel pump
    • External fuel strainer
    • Snapring, if equipped to the retainer slots while holding the modular fuel sender assembly down or use Fuel Sender Lock Nut Tool J-39765 in order to install the cam lock ring
    • Fuel tank
    • Negative battery cable
  1. Pressurize the fuel system and verify no leaks.

2004 olds alero. new fuel filter and plugs. still wont start.

Did you check for spark at any ot the spark plug wires/ coils? If there is, check for fuel pressure at the fuel rail. Take the port cap off and connect a fuel pressure gauge. If one is not available, with a pocket screw driver deppress valve at port and observe if fuel pours out. If no fuel comes out at all, check your fuel pump circuit. Check for good ground and power at fuel pump connector. If power/ground are ok, replace fuel pump. If spark and good fuel pressure is present, there is the possibility of engine mechanical issues(jumped) timing chain). Also, a plugged catalitic wont let engine start but its very unlikely thats your problem. Start with your basics: spark, fuel, engine mechanical and catalitic.

If you have spark and good fuel pressure. The only way it wouldn't start is that the timing is off.

My 02 Alero 2.2 won't start....replaced battery and had the starter tested which is fine...could it be the timing chain?

Ok you should check for fuel pressure and /or spark if you do not have fuel pressure then you might want to check fuses or fuel pump if you have fuel pressure not have any spark! Then you may want to check your spark module is bolted to the top of the valve cover. I don't think it would be the timing chain I would start with checking for fuel pressure and your spark module or just replace it if you have no spark. I hope this helps!
