Hi, I have a 1998 suzuki swift (1.3L). On the way to work today it started running bad in that it lost (nearly all) power and revs. This spluttered on and off for a little while, then came good. Its the second time its done this and its not a car being cold thing. I'm thinking that it might be spark plug / coil leads or fuel pump / filter playing up, but I know enough about cars to get myself in trouble so was hoping for some advice before I started pulling stuff apart. Ta.

An engine needs three things to run. Fire, fuel, and compression. Fire being the ignition system covering everything from good connections to the coil(s), good spark plugs and wires, ignition module if equipped with one, a perfectly good and happy computer if fuel injected, a working fuel pump and fuel delivery system. You can rule out intake air coming and going, air filters don't clog and then unclog. The injection computer needs a sensor on the throttle blade to sense where the throttle is positioned and if you are pressing down or letting off of the accelerator. If you suspect water in the gas add a bottle of HEAT (available at auto parts stores) to the fuel and start buying gas somewhere else. Poor connections to the Mass Airflow Sensor can give you fits. Compression isn't suddenly being lost and regained so you can rule that out. I vote the fuel delivery system, ignition system, or fuel injection issues maybe even a nearly clogged fuel filter, when was the last time you changed it? A worn out fuel pump relay can give you a fit too, they're cheap, replace it.
