SOURCE: how to fix a power steering leak for a chevy
Is the leak coming from a hose or from the pump itself...If its a hose, most likely the factory crimp clamps gave way...Pry them off and replace with a hose clamp...If it's the pump itself, then the diaphragm is most likely warn out, and the pump itself will need to be replaced...You should be able to tell easily where its leaking by turning on the vehicle, make sure the unit is full of fluid, and have someone turn the steering hard right or left and the pressure will cause the fluid to leak or stream out of the problem area...As a note if its a fairly strong leak/stream the over-the-counter stop leak products will not work...tg

This is a common problem with the 2001 Impala. The intermediate shaft in the steering needs to be lubricated or replaced. There is also a recall on some Impala's. http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/recalls/results.cfm I suggest you take it to a trusted Chevy dealer and have this repaired.
SOURCE: My windshield wipers on my 2001 Chevy Impala stop
This is a very common problem on the Impalas. I had to fix my 2002 Impala. Both wipers will point straight up.
There is a tab that may be bent near the wiper motor shaft.
Open the hood.
You need to remove the driver's side wiper arm. You need to pop-off the round black cover and there's a nut underneath.
Then remove the plastic cover between the windshield and the engine compartment.
See the pictures below, Look for a bent TAB. it's really tough, but bend it back with pliers and/or big screwdriver. The "catch" needs to stop on the tab to park the wipers correctly.
If the tab is OK, look for a missing or broken spring. For that, you'll need to get the replacement part from the dealer. May be: park mechanism, part #12494832

most likely the clockspring or ribbon assembly inside the steering wheel has a broken spot in it. if you try to do it yourself be careful with the airbag system
