96 subaru legacy tried to go into park when shift to neutral while moving. no reverse

  • rialbk Jan 02, 2017

i would check the inhibitor switch. This unit controls the shifting of gears in the automatic transmission. if the adjustment doesn't solve the issue then replacement is the solution. Its simply held on by the three bolts in the pic and the unplug electrical connector. The gear selector cable has a cotter pin. Get a new one to replace the old its inexpensive

SOURCE: automatic shift knob stuck in

There are two switches that have to be activated before the park lock is released. The first is on the brake pedal, the second is the thumb button on the shifter. Most often the brake pedal switch is the problem, it can be pushed back and forth in its mount, sometimes it gets pushed to far and no longer switches when the pedal is depressed. You can also use the emergency release and shift out of park anytime. There is a plastic "ring" around the base of the shifter, in most cars it is black, in cars with wood grain trim pieces it is wood grain. The best way to get it out is to unscrew the center console and push it up from the back, you can pry it up buy you may break the tabs that hold it in. When this piece is out, look down at the front of the shifter base, there is a hole a pen will fit down into. If you push a pen, pencil, or any small round straight object down into that hole, it will mechanically release the shifter lock and allow you to get out of park. My daughter drove her 96 Legacy that way for months until I got around to fixing the brake switch.

SOURCE: what causes pulsating brakes in a 96 subaru

Assuming you are not referring to the pulsation experienced when the anti-lock braking system engages, you should replace the rotors and the pads while you are at it. The days of turning or resurfacing rotors are over. They are cheap.

SOURCE: I have a 1995 subaru impreza. I cant get the

There is a locking solenoid under the plastic shroud around you shifter. When you put on your brake the solenoid is supposed to pull back to release the shifter.
The buzzing you are hearing is that solenoid trying to pull back. Going to have to replace it.

What does a park/neutral switch look like in a subaru?

The neutral safety switch is mounted on the transmision behind the shift arm. If it fails, the whole switch must be changed. A schematic can be obtained by buying a repair manual at any parts store. Although I don't know why you need it. The switch eather works or it doesn't.

Reverse lights don't work. replaced switch and checked fuse and bulbs 1997 subaru legacy

is this car an automatic transmission? if it is then you will need to check the gear selector switch on the transmission. I have seen one that would not properly engage for the park/neutral and reverse switches to function but the car was still drivable.

1997 Subaru Legacy shift interlock is bad I think we have to use the override hole to move shift but it will not start, are these problems associated and tied together? I was wondering if there is an alarm...

Hello, If your moving the shifter, then trying to start it, make sure the shifter is in neutral because it will only start in park and neutral and no other position. The shift interlock operates off of the brake pedal switch and has nothing to do with the starting systems on these cars and will start without needing the brake pedal depressed which indicates to me that the problems are not related. If it is an alarm system issue and it's a Subaru dealer installed accessory, there should be a secret overide button located just behind the plastic trim to the left of the hood pop lever. If it's there it's very small and almost impossible to locate by feel alone. I hope this info helps...(subyguru)...

Will not shift out of park It is not a stuck break solenoid

could be a bent parking pawl from engaging park while the vehicle is still moving. The park setting on an auto pushes a steel rod into a hole in the gearbox mainshaft so if you engage park when you are still moving it will eventually bend the pin and it will stick. You may be able to use force via a bar, at the gearbox end where the shift cable connects, while an assistant rocks the car back and forth. If you get it free, do not use park any more, instead use neutral and the handbrake.

I have a 99 subaru legacy outback trans slip

cheak your fluid level in your transmission as if it is low it wont go into gear properly you will move it from park or neutral to a gear it can take a while before it will kick into gear if you top up the fluid that should fix the problem if it still does it after this take it to a tranmission specalist and have it serviced as the bands may be streched
