Don, this old Disabled Navy Vet can't thank you enough. I have been researching on-line, computers are the one thing I can troubleshoot very well. One good thing, my neighbor is a very good automotive mechanic. I am just trying to narrow the problem down, the least expensive possable problem first. I even read someone's entry that said oven cleaner blown into the heater core for 15 minutes, then flushed out would work. Ha-ha!

  • don-ohio Dec 28, 2016

Well, you already flushed the system, and if both heater hoses are hot,it's probably the blend door. Good to hear you have a nice neighbor to mechanic for you! That's great! Hope you get er fixed,Stephen! don-ohio (:^)

Blend door actuator may be bad,or a dual climate control valve if it has one. Don-ohio (:^)

Testimonial: "Thank you Don. I really am a rookie when it comes to being a mechanic. I can do a lot of things, except work on cars. Is there a fuse that might be blown that controls the heating?"

  • don-ohio Dec 26, 2016

The best thing a person can do is get at least a Haynes manual for their model of car if they plan on keeping it.
Yes,there may be a fuse that sends power to the solenoids or blend door.
Go online and a search on a Lincoln forum will help you out,I'm sure. don-ohio (:^)

Just looked on a Lincoln search and the culprit is probably a bad blend door actuator. They fail often in late 90s Lincoln TCs. don-ohio (:^)

Why do I have only Intermittent heat with new thermostat?

Sounds like an air pocket in the coolant system. Those can be a pain, some cars have bleed valves to help. If there is an air pocket, it will seem to be full of coolant, but when the air pocket gets to the heater core it gets stuck there and guess what? No heat, because you won't get any heat unless hot coolant is in the heater core. Old fashioned way is to open the system and keep pouring coolant in at operating temp with heat on full until all the air is pushed out. If it has a bleed valve that can be helpful. Have seen this problem on many vehicles.

Thermostat

hello,
first thing to do is open the radiator cap (when cold) if you have one, other wise look in the recovery bottle and make sure that it is half full of coolant. if full, start the engine and let the engine warm up to normal temp the heater on and on max temp and max fan control. watch the temp gauge and make sure the temp goes to the normal operating area and does not overheat the engine. if temp is ok and you have heat that is hot as normal then everything is ok.if no heat and temp is to high then thermostat maybe bad? if engine temp is ok and no heat then you may have blockage in the heater core and or hoses

Rinnai temperature flucuates water

Hook up a professional scanner an see what the actual temp of the engine is . Coolant temp. sensor is a input to the PCM - engine computer . Go to harbor freight tools an buy a Non-Contact Infrared Thermometer With Laser Targeting What's the temp at the thermostat housing . Does the temp.'s match an the gauge is off . Testing an not guess as to what the problem is.
The PCM sends temp. info to the instrument cluster via the class2 serial data bus . I have seen a number of GM instrument cluster issue's over the year's . Could be a electrical problem , an the engine temp is correct .

My 99 GMC sonoma with a 2.2L is not warming up properly

Possibly plugged or inerporable heater core. Possibly heater core valve (this diverts hot air through your heater system) When you flushed the block, was there a lot of contaminant? 95% of the time, cold heat means thermostat. Also there are a lot of really cheap after market thermostats, you can buy one as low as $6.00. That being said, just because a thermo is new doesn't necessarily mean it opens/shuts when it should. You can look on You Tube on how to test one in your kitchen with boiling water,.

So three basic things affect interior heat temps. Thermostat, plugged heater core/.valve, and insufficient coolant or liquid to tranfser heat. If your interior coolant (engine temp) is working normally and your vehicle reaches operating tempature according to the needle, your thermosat is probably not the cause.

My bet is somehow, your heater core is plugged so that their is not enough "flow"

2004 explorer 4.0 coolant reservoir boils over when stabolized at normal level, no heat when level drops temp indicator normal

go to autozone rent the free tool called a block tester buy the fluid for it (about $8.00 us)drive the car make sure the resivour is about 3 inches down so you dont suck any fluid into block tester. pour blue fluid into block tester put it in antifreeze resavour. squeeze bulb sucking air from resouivour for up to 2 minutes if fluid turns yellow your head gaskets are leaking. I think you may find this to be your problem

Slight overheating in traffic, goes up 2 notches over half way mark.coolant pushed out of overflow bottle, engine heats too long before the fans chip in.temperature stays at halfway mark on...

These vehicles, when equipped with the 3.1L engine are very prone to head gasket failure. A local garage should be able to preform a block check to tell wether combustion gasses are entering the coolant. Because you said the coolant pushed out the overflow this is definately where i would start. The normal operation of that vehicle is for the fans to turn on around 106 degrees celcius. If you can, take a temperature reading of the coolant to ensure they are coming on at the right temp. Other possibilities are an inefficient radiator, coolant temp switch/sensor causing inproper fan on temperature,

When car idles temp stays normal but when i start driving the temp of the car gets cold and so does the heat? i changed the thermostat and freeze plug and had radiator flushed.

My suggestion would be to take your vehicle to your nearest trusted automotive repair center and have them test the coolant system - this sort of test is relatively inexpensive and will reveal problems with coolant flow including thermostat operation.
A point to note is that when you are driving the vehicle and it begins to cool, especial for a manual transmission vehicle, you will notice a rise in RPM's as the engine attempts to warm up and this can lead to premature aging of the engine.
You will likely need to replace a temperature sensor, but a quick test will reveal where and what.

No heat when engine temp is normal.

Had the same problem with my 2006 Impala with the 3.5 engine - there is an air pocket in the heater core. With the engine cold, remove the upper heater hose (marked with blue tape in the picture) and add water to the hose until coolant comes out of the metal cross-over tube. Fix takes 5 minutes…all you need is a pair of pliers and a funnel.f7b2b4c.jpg
