1998 Vectra Broken timing belt! Other head fitted with minimal interfering with original head fittings. Car started and runs at speed but does not want to tickover!
Original gaskets used, but would buy new set if car can run!

Hi most common issue for this is the oil cooler unit fitted under the plate at top centre of engine. To access this all the intake manifold has to be removed. Also thermostat housing needs to be removed (this housing runs through the front of engine just between head and timing cover). The plate is rectangular in shape surrounded by bolts with a connection to and from it at either end. These connections/ pipes as far as I can remember run down front of engine and will need to be disconnected ( take note how these pipes run). If you haven't replaced thermostat I strongly recommend you fit a new thermostat and housing. Make sure when refitting that the surfaces are clean and flat any grooves or pitting needs to be sealed. Good luck
How long does it run? Sure you only changed the serpentine belt? The car would actual even run without the serpentine (or also called accessory belt) since the belt only drives fairly non essential components (AC compressor, alternator, fan, power steering pump. etc).
if belt was not put on properly car wont run. if its improperly timed valves are opening and closing when they shouldnt be. which inturn will not ,ix air gas and timing spark. when belt is on wrong it will seem like no compression because valves are improperly working. belt must be put on the rite way for your car to run.
Well firstly if your wife drove the car for 5 miles with the tensioner broken, then the belt being lose will have slipped a couple of teeth. Did you set the camshaft and crank alignment marks correctly before you fitted the new tensioner? If you did and it still won't start then that means that you have one or two bent valve's in the cylinder head. You will have to remove the cylinder head and replace those valves or that car will never start again.
If the timing belt has broken whilest the car was running, it could very well have damaged the valves. But this all depends on the type of engine. If it is an interference-fit engine, the valves are most likely damaged from the pistons hitting them as they wouldn't get out of the way when the pistons traveled upward. If it is not an interference fit engine, you may be in luck, and the engine just might be ok. If you take your car in to a technician and he tells you the engine was damaged by the timing belt failure, ask to see the head. Have him show you first-hand that the valves are damaged and/or if there is other damage to the head. (I'm just trying to save you from getting ripped off. :)
i had to call every scrap dealer in england(nearly) to find a compatible unit.(skoda.vw.audi.with same output will fit,BUT they produce power differently at different engine speeds...)the blocks/heads are the same though.i managed to get the whole front end of the car for about £1000. NOT CHEAP.if the block was not damaged ,only the head and pistons/rods.your looking at around £1200 for new.../250 scrap head
this sounds like the cam belt may have broken if the engine wont run at all, if it still runs then im thinking its a head gasket blowen or an inlet valve is not seating right (ie: bent or badly pitted) and its venting the inlet manifold so your seeing a puff of partly undurnt fule or smoke! check with a compreshion tester all the cylinders they should have at least 150,,180 psi if very low then tip in a small drop of engine oil and retest,, if one or more cylinders are still low (ie: both next to each other) its a head gasket blown also look behind the frount cam belt cover to check if the cam shaft is turning around if its not the belt has broken,, and you may well need a recon cylinder head as it would have bent some of the valves in the head,,,,normaly if the cam drive belt has broken the motor just locks up, but if it did not lock up it will spin over very fast and would not even try to fire up,, its about 5 to 8 hours work changing the head gasket and fitting a "new cam belt",,
HI,AT WHAT SPEED DID THIS HAPPEN,IF AT IDLE OR VERY LOW SPEED,HAVE A NEW BELT FITTED IF IT RUNS NORMALLY YOU ARE LUCKY,IF IT RUN ROUGH WITH BAD MISFIRE OR NOT STARTING AT ALL THE VALVES ARE BENT,PLEASE LET ME KNOW,ANDY.
