It sounds more like the electrical connections are disrupted. Did you replace the entire plug wires? They do fail after a few years in use, and the older carbon wires especially go down.
i would replace the fuel pump. and the reason your gas gage is not reading what it is supposed to be is because the sending unit is prob bad. both of which are in the gas tank. im not sure on that year but i think you can remove the back seat or a piece of the trunk to get to both of them. if not the gas tank will need to be dropped to get them out
now theres carfax but if u go online and check for recall notices or service teck bulletins these tell u if and what problems exist with a vehicle but that doesent always mean that previous owner ever took care of the problem
