WHAT CAUSES A CAR TO STOP RUNNING WHILE PUMPING GAS

Turn your key to start position but don't start the car listen for the fuel pump to stop pumping do this several times,this push's fuel back threw the lines,and injectors that have ran dry

you don't say where the noise is. that is important to give a clue where the issue is. when stopping on the brakes 3 things happen. you press the pedal and the abs pump starts pumping fluid. the second is the brake capilers start pushing on the rotors to slow the car. the rotors are attached to the wheels and that stops the car. so if the rotors are warped you will feel a vibration in the steering wheel when stepping on the brakes. if its your foot feeling the pump working that is normal for abs pumping. you should feel it and holding the pedal will keep it working and stop you from skidding if everything is working correctly

Sounds like a fuel pump issue. Check the pressure from the fuel pump.

Maybe tank is full? Could be something was shoved in the tube that runs from the gas cap to the tank.

was the car running when you was pumping gas. most cars now have a shut off if it is running when gas is pumped

I have seen this scenario hundreds of times. I get probably at least one car per week towed into the shop with the same story.

If you ran it out of gas, you probably damaged the pump vanes (the part that actually does the pumping) Just because you can hear the pump motor running, it does not mean it is pumping fuel.

This is much more likely to be the cause of your problem if the fuel pump has a lot of miles on it. (more than 70K)

TRY THE FUEL FILTER FIRST IF THE FUEL PUMP WAS GOING BAD IT WOULD STALL AS YOU PUSH ON THE GAS PEDDLE AND PUMPING THE PEDDLE WOULD NOT HELP FUEL INJECTION AND PUMPING THE GAS WILL HAVE NO EFFECT ON THE RUNNING OF THE VEHICAL

It is either out of gas,and the gauge is wrong,or the fuel pump has gone out,the sound does not always mean the pump is pumping,just that the motor made with the pump is running,pump still could be bad.

Are you pumping gas with motor running????? If so Stop doing that. You are risking a fire or explosion. Your check egin light must be coming on from this. The fuel system is pressurized and when you take the cap off you have just DE-pressureized the system
