First thing to do is check the fuel pressure, it should be 42-46 PSI under a load. If that is ok then run a fault code test to see if any codes are in memory.

Old '87 ranger been sitting in folks yard few years. fires up fine, but spits and sputters going down the road

Old fuel in tank, fuel filter clogged, plugged/clogged carb. or fuel injectors.

1. Drain fuel from tank and replace with new fuel with SeaFoam or Lucas

2. Repace fuel filter

3. With engine running at a high idle and air cleaner off, spray or pour carb/fuel injection cleaner into carb/fuel injectors.

If problems persist, check plug wires for cracks and/or breaks. Pull spark plugs checking for fouling.

When advancing down highway vehecle spits and sputters then clears up then spits and sputters what is it

When was last tune up? Plugs, wires, all filters & fluids? Especially fuel filter. I'd start there and run a good fuel system cleaner through it.

Engine will not turn over. It will crank but

sounds like a problem I had on a 99 ford ranger. I had fuel, spark and all the essentials needed for it to start but it wouldnt, but it cranked over good. It turned out to be the crank shaft sensor. Mine just had moisture in it so I shot it with wd-40 (displaces moisture) and its running today.

Ford ranger is shacking and sputters when I shut it off.

Have it checked for codes...may be an idle control or EGR issue. If you ran it dry, then you need to change the fuel filter ASAP...the truck is old enough to have sediment in the tank and a clogged filter will stress and damage your fuel pump. Make sure to depressurize the fuel system before pulling the filter to avoid getting a face full of gasoline.

John, I will save you some money, I just took my 94 ranger with the same problem to the dealer and they fixed it. They replaced the ignition sensor and the fuel pump sensor and a O2 sensor. The ignition and fuel pump sensor is in a fuse box right behind the battery. They are a 1 in. black pull out cubes. Ask a parts store which ones they are. Numbers are stamped on the cube. Try replacing the ignition module in the distributor. This is a common problem on these engines.
