SOURCE: 1996 Subaru Legacy No Power At All
Last night I checked the battery and it was still good. I disconnected and then reconn ected both terminals and that brought the power back. When I turned the key the power went out again. I repeated the procedure but did not turn the key. Instead, I took off the knee bolster and tried to wiggle the wires under the dash to see if I could find the source since it seems to be related to the ignition. Nothing cut the power so I started it up and it worked fine except for the check engine light which was flashing that says I have a misfire condition. I drove the car 25 miles to work this morning and will be taking it to the dealer for a better inspection.

Not sure what is causing it, but it sounds like you're running on 3 cyllinders. Check plugs, wires, timing . timing belt may have jumped, bad injector, low fuel pressure.
SOURCE: engine shakes and hesitate when started until it idles down
Sounds like its missing on 1 or more cylinders. A check of the plugs and wires is in order, Could be a fouled plug or a loose/bad sparkplug wire. Best of luck.

Digital Odometer??
Try this procedure and let me know if this worked for you. I have done this several dozen times and it helped reset the Instrument Cluster.
1. With the Key IN the Ignition and in the OFF (not ACC, On or Start) Position
2. Push in and hold-in the Trip Odometer Reset button.
3. When "sof 4.0" appears: release the Button and WAIT.
4. There maybe some "E" Codes that may appear.
5. Continue to let the System run its course. There should be a great light show on the dash along with the Tach and Speedometer needles dancing all over the place.
6. In about 30-seconds it will complete it's Reset Cycle.
Again let me know if this helped, or if you have additional information or questions REPLY in the Comments Section of this Post.
