possibly the coolant temperature sensor is bad

Igood t sounds like water in the carb, (if it has one) or water in the fuel filter. Remove the fuel line from either the carb or injection system, turn the engine over until you get pure fuel through the line. reconnect, spray the starter fluid and it should go, it will osund rough, but a few good blips on the throttle, should clear the line. Let me know, if that doesn't work I have a few more things to try. Regards Dave

Cheapest thing to try is a fluid flush and filter change. Unfortunately, if that does not work, then next bet is probably a rebuild.

The IAC may be slow to respond to input signal.
This is the Idle Air Control so it does affect the idle.
Might be a cause of your rough idle.

I'm worried about the over charging it's charging 17 volts. Fried the radio and burnt out both back up lights. Checked fuel it's good
This is a common problem with these trucks - normal max charging voltage should be about 14 volts. The voltage regulator assembly (which is inside the generator) is probably fried. It is much better to replace the entire generator (a certified rebuilt) rather than trying to replace the internal part, and you should do it before it blows up your ECM and ignition module/coil. It is possible that high engine revs are creating a voltage that is screwing things up, but that's a longshot.
Ok thank you I'll try that. That's what I was thinking aswell.
New alternator same problem with over charging. Battery is good also. Could I have a ground problem some were that would cause this?
Maybe - you should carefully check the main ground from engine to frame to battery (take the bolts out at the engine and frame and thoroughly clean the connections). Also check the wiring and connections at the generator and battery. Look at the attached image for the wiring and checking procedure.
Running these generators with an open connection in the wiring tends to fry them, and unfortunately, this generator is not serviceable. You may have to replace it again(warranty?).
As for as the 50mph issue is concerned, the engine is probably being starved of fuel under load - plugged fuel filter, crimped fuel line, weak fuel pump, etc.
Ok thank you. I will be up and working on it again in the morning. I will post what comes about after giving it a good cleaning. Volt by bolt wire by wire. Its worth it tho.
Bought new ground wires removed old bolts and wires cleaned everything up. Put new 0 gage ground wires. Same problem along with had alternator tested on and off truck. Same problem. Alternator tested good both times. I'm beginning to think I'll just buy a new computer for $100 and just drive it around and see what happens. At least I'll have a computer on hand if something happens to it.
Well, the only thing left that I can think of is how you are determining it is overcharging. I hope you are using a good multimeter and checking at the battery while the truck is running? Instrument panel gauges are not reliable.
Guess ill try a different multimeter and check again. Thanks for all the help. I'm about done messing with it. I'll just run it and see what happens hopefully nothing.
Lastly, I rechecked charging specs for this setup - can reach 16+ volts when detecting a very low battery voltage (such as an open on the sensing line from the battery), and around 14 volts under normal operation. I am assuming you carefully checked the wiring (especially the voltages at the connector at the generator) for a problem with the connector pins or the wiring from the generator to the battery.
My experience has been when you can't explain what's going on (after what seems to be a successful check of everything), the problem is with the battery - strange things can happen to the internals in these during or after high charge or discharge. I would do a load test on the battery or just try a different one. Good luck ...
I disconected everything again and reconnected and I'm getting 14.73 with lights and heater fan on high so all is good now. Thank you for the help. There is all ways a but tho. Now when I cut the a.c. on the compressor kicks on and 2 secs later stalls the truck out.
Well, the truck is 24 years old and was sitting for a while. Sounds like you may have seized the AC compressor. If the clutch seizes, you will have a whole new world of hurt - I would disconnect the clutch electrical connector until you can have the AC system checked, but given the age, may not be worth it.
That's what I did not even worried about the a.c. at this point. As long as I can get dram a to b I'm happy. Thanks for the help
