You probably have a problem with

Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control System
The automatic transmission shift lock control system is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the engine is running. The driver must press the brake pedal before moving the shift lever out of the PARK position. The system consists of the following components.
• The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid
• The brake switch
• The rear integration module (RIM)
• The transmission control module (TCM) or powertrain control module (PCM)
With the ignition ON, battery positive voltage is supplied to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid from the ignition 3 relay. The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid is controlled by the rear integration module. When the rear integration module (RIM) receives a class 2 serial data message from the transmission control module (TCM) or powertrain control module (PCM) indicating that the shift lever is in the PARK position the rear integration module (RIM) grounds the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid control circuit. This causes the solenoid to energize mechanically locking the shift lever in the PARK position. When the driver presses the brake pedal the rear integration module receives the brake applied signal and turns off the ground to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid control circuit. This allows the shift lever to be moved out of the PARK position.

Won,t shift out of park?

Check to see if you have brake lights if not fix the switch on brake pedal. If yes you need to look at the shift interlock system, normally a little white box just below the key on the column. On fords you can put key in and turn a little bit so it's straight vertical and shift to neutral then start it. Your problem is with the shift interlock system that gets activated with the press of brake pedal

1991 Cadillac 409 engine won't shift out of Park

Lets start by checking your brake light switch.
Your car has a switch on the brake pedal that not only makes the brake lights come on, but also tells the transmission it can shift out of park.
This really may be 2 separate switches, but should be under the dashboard and both should "open" when you push the brake pedal down.
Take a good flashlight and look.
The switches are small, about the size of your thumb, and both should have 2 wires attached to them.
Be blessed.

2004 cts bake lights will not come on just setting car has to be on is that a bad bake switch and car is stuck in park

most modern cars (and trucks, too!) have a safety system that prevents someone from shifting out of park if the brakes are not pressed (it helps keep small children from moving the car out of park), check the switch(es) on the brake pedal to see if A) it (they) are getting power, and B) that the power is going thru to the brake lights/ brake interrupt solenoid.

My car wont shift out of park but the brake lights come on.

Look under the dash, on the brake pedal arm. There are one or two switches that activate brake lights and/or shift unlock. Check for loose mounting nut or a missing rubber nubber. Is the brake pedal coming all the way back up? Look on the floor for something not usually found there. These switches are adjustable and it may be as simple as adjusting them. Have a helper look for brake lights on and shift lever unlocked while you push and release the switches with your finger. Depress the brake pedal to get it out of the way. Remember to set the park brake first. Could just be a bad switch or loose connector. Check fuses. Is shifter fully in Park.

Shift lever lock won't release when brake pedal is

do the brake lights work? most of the time the problem is a broken wire at the brake light switch under the dash on the brake pedal. the ECM does not see the signal from the switch so it won't allow the car to shift from park.

2005 ford explorer gear shift stuck in park

Check to see if your brake lights are working. If not, you have a blown fuse for the brake lights or a bad brake light switch on the brake pedal arm bracket.
When you turn the key to ON, a solenoid energizess and lock the sihft interlock. When you step on the brake to shift out of park, It de-energizes the relay so you can move the sift lever. You should hear a click noise with they key in ON position and you step on the brake pedal. TRy this witohout starting the engine & listen.
The bypass emergency procedure is in your owner manual under sift interlock in the index.
But, usually you turn the key to OFF (first click) and then step on the brake & shift out of park. Then start car in neutral and drive away.
It works because you did not energize the shift lock solenoid, by not turning key to ON.

report results and please rate, thanks.

Also, check the wire going to the brake switch under the dash. It may have just come off.

sounds like you have a bad brkae light switch, which is located on the brake pedal assembly. a bad switch will not let you shift out of park and you will not have any brake lights as the car does not recognize that the pedal is being pushed and brakes engaged. easy to replace switch if you are handy, if not this is a inexpensive repair at any mechanic. hope this was helpful is so please rate 4 thumbs.
