SOURCE: removing oil pan from 98 explorer V8 5.0
nniezgodzki: if you have a 2wd explorer, you need to remove the torsion bars to gain access to the oil pan based on the procedures shown in Alldata. The torsion bars are the rods which fit into the lower control arms and go towards the center of the truck frame. Removal and installation of the torsion bars has a procedure you need to follow, make sure you check into it and follow it. if you need help, write me and i'll do my best to help you.
SOURCE: leaky oil pan
There are a couple of solutions here.
You can try to retorque the pan bolts and this may slow or fix the leak. This is probably the easiest thing to try.
You may be able to drop the pan down to the cross member and sneak the gasket into place. This is more difficult, but may save having to jack up the engine.
You can't remove structural bar.
If you do decide to lift the engine, you can probably replace the gasket by lifting the engine while everything is still connected.
Good Luck with your project.
Tim
Thanks Ford! You could have made a bolt on crossmember.

no they dont make a partial gasket kit... unless youve damaged the oil pan gasket, the one that ison there should be fine... put some black silicone rtv sealant where the front cover and oil pan/ block meet. if youve damaged the gasket you have to drop the pan.
SOURCE: Must the torsion bar be removed on my 1995 Ford
You do not need to remove the torsion bar. just jack up the vehicle under the lower control arm. The shock will also keep the lower control arm from traveling to far.
If it has a torsion bar running through the lower control arm than it must have independent front suspension. Remove the caliper and bracket. The rotor should knock off but it can be left on. remove the axle nut. The drive axle should push through the hub. Some tapping with a hammer may be needed. Separate the upper and lower ball joints from the knuckle and remove the knuckle (you will be able to push the drive axle all the way through once the knuckle is free of the ball joints).
remove the snap ring from the lower ball joint and hit it out with a hammer. You will need a ball joint press to install the new ball joint.

SOURCE: My speedometer and odometer on my 98 ford explorer
the speedometer/odometer works on a cable that goes into the side of the transmission with one 10mm bolt holding it in. It sounds as if the cable has been broken, pulled loose, or siezed up. Its easy to check the end under the vehicle but its very complicated checking it inside the dashboard. If you are a do it yourself type of person, id look underneath and see if the connection under the vehicle is still connected. Look on left rear of the transmission for a cable that goes into it and is held with a "Y" bracket and a small bolt. The dashboard part is the type of job where u got to make sure you remember where each screw goes to get back together.
