P1494
The code refers to the leak detection pump that is part of the gasoline vapor control system which is for pollution minimization. It says either that the pump switch or mechanical operation is faulty. According to a Chrysler manual I have, you would find the pump, probably on the underside of the vehicle by tracing the hoses related to the vapor recovery tank that may be in the right front corner of the engine compartment (I don't know Jeep designs) and then check to see if the pump starts when you turn the ignition to the run position when the vehicle is cold. Then remove the vacuum hose side of the pump and see if it draws a vacuum. If it does, then the vacuum-detecting switch that detects that the pump operation is OK may be faulty. If the pump doesn't start or doesn't draw a vacuum then the power to the pump, the pump itself, or the vacuum line may be leaky. Finally, the powertrain controller could be at fault.
In any case, that is where the issue is, and it should not be a major issue if it is handled by a knowledgeable mechanic. But you could check it over yourself if you are so inclined.

LEAK DETECTION PUMP DEFECTIVE/INOP
THE ROOT CAUSE HERE IS A DEFECTIVE EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS LEAK DETECTION PUMP, IT PULLS A VACUUM ON THE GAS TANK TO CHECK FOR FUEL LEAKS. REPLACE IT.

Where should i start my troubleshooting for engine trouble code 13 on my 1992 Lexus LS400. i've already checked most of the connecters & wire harnesses & they seem to be ok.

Hi Tony, Trouble code thirteen is referring to the RPM signal.circuitry. It can relate to the crank or cam pick up sensors and be a poor connection, but will normally make it difficult for the engine to start once switched off. Check all connections plug coil connections and cam and crank, one or more may simply be loose. and depending how you went over the humps, may simply be disconnected, but unplug and replug each. Appearances can be deceptive. Regards John

My 94 jeep loaps and then backfires out the tail pipe can you solve

Power train control module controls the drivetrain. If you can get a code from the computer it would go a long way diagnosing wether its an engine malfunction or computer issue. To get the codes bring a pen & piece of paper out to the car, turn the key to the run position (not start but when all the dash lights come on) then off then run then off then run (three times in the on position, after you have turned the ke on then off 3 times on then leave the key in the on position and watch the check engine light. It will flash a code to you for example check engine light turns on then off 1 time with a long pause then the light flashes three times then another pause this would be the #13 code , most start with this code to tell you that it is checking codes. Just count the # of flashes (from the check engine light) & that is the first # of the code it will pause then flash again & that is the second # of the code. Flash 5 times pause then 5 more flashes is the # 55, & that is the last code you get to indicate all codes have been displayed, so key on then off then on then off then on & watch the check engine light count the flashes write down that # when it pauses then count the next number of flashes until the pause & that is your trouble cod they are 2 # codes & usually 13 is the first code flashed & the # 55 is the code that lets you know it is done, all the 2 digit codes in between are trouble codes & can be found in a chiltons or haynes service manual or search the web for chrysler trouble or computer codes.

you can go to www.free auto mechanic.com & find the the trouble code chart for the obd1 & obd2 scan tools. it's a great site, u can even request a section out of any car manual for them to send u. they do take donations, even if its only $3 but u do not have to send it. they will still e-mail the repair info u need. but the trouble code chart is instantly available.
