Ford Escape Hesitant to start, gauges going crazy?

My 2003 Ford escape is hesitant to start. When starting my gauges go crazy! RPM goes up to 8000, gas gage goes to F, speedometer hits 120 and im sitting still. It all slowly drops down to wear it needs to be but i have to wait at least 5 minutes for my cd player to turn on because it reads Initializing. What is going on?

Open curcuit in crank sensor replace it.

    2001 Ford Focus Zx3 battery dead, gauges going crazy then totally cut off?? changed battery and alterntor, and terminals! battery light still on a couple hrs later totally dead again and gauges doing sane thing?? help does anyone know whats going on?? Thanks Patty

Car runs rough when first starts, rpm goes down and eventually turns off if not given gas
i would try changing spark plugs. go to this web page shows how to install spark plugs on 2001 ford escape. I put the bosch platinum +2 in my escape, part # 4305 at autozone, you dont have to gap the plug. mine run better after installing the plugs.
