Hi, theres alot of componets that can cause that issue. The basics are: coil packs, ign. Control module, ecm, and a few various sensors. Now, did u run out gas by chance? Or did vechicle get impacted? There is a fuel cut out switch that may need resetting. Is your check engine light on? Get a obd2 scanner and check for error codes, that should point you in the right direction.

Randem rough idel and fuel/rich mix smell. Hot or cold ? Changed the water temp sensior for the eci and also new eci? 2001 Ford escort

I'm surprised you didn't get an error code, mainly on the spark plug wires. I would try those, they can cause a bunch of trouble, including rough idle, rich burning, everytime my Grand Marquis acted up, it was the spark plug wires. Of course it was also the only thing not covered in the warranty. Check it out.

I have a 1998 ford escort zx2 and the back left

If you can still find a replacement left light lens of your 1998 ford escort zx2, you can replace it, of course. Just
take off the mounting screw of the lens, and take off the
defective lens. Then, you can mount the replacement.

1993 ford escort spark plug removal.

16mm plug spanner, a regular socket is ok so long as it is a tight fit.
Use an extender and a crossbar on the socket instead of a ratchet, that way you can keep the socket dead straight.
