fans came late on those car, like 212 and second fan comes on at 224,you reprogram it to come a lot sooner,,other thing is there might be gunk inside the block, and coolant has hard time to pass through, and staying longer than enough in block temp goes high, even tough the radiator is doing it's job,it is just coming out block lot hotter than it suppose to be,and gauge read the block not the radiator
Sounds to be the dash itself. there is a chip in there and it sounds like it shorted out. You have to replace the panel. Junk yard would be best and cheapest.
disconect wire from temp sending unit
if that stops gauge moving , u most likely need to replace sender unit
they are not expensive
if after replacing sender unit gauge still does it, u need to replace the gauge
For 1997 Pontiac Sunfire 2.2L SFI OHV 4cylthe Coolant Temperature Sensor is located under hood, driver side, upper engine area, below valve cover, mounted in cylinder head.
Fig. 1: The ECT is also the temperature sending unit for the gauge on the instrument cluster
You didn't say what kind of car it was, but with no heat and high readings on the gauge, my guess would be your coolant level. If that isn't the problem, then try replacing the thermostat. Other possibilities would be a defective temp sensor, or a bad electric fan on the radiator.
Its definitly a bad reading, you would know if your vehicle is overheating, you can usually smell it right away.I would say its your temperature gauge sending unit is defective, check the wires to see if they are well connected or broken. ask a backyard mechanic for assistance.
