SOURCE: change serpentine belt and tension pulley and idle pulley and
could be the alternator, water pump
take the belt and spin all the pulleys and listen for noise and make sure they turn smoothly
another trick is to take a can of wd40 or equivalent and spray the bearings 1 at a time till the noise goes away or quiets down
SOURCE: noisey drive belt, possibly alternator, belt
sounds like idler bearings but you have to release the tension to check,Also you can check the rest of the pulleys also at this time. I dont think you have to drop the engine.
SOURCE: noisy water pump pulley, alternator pulley..timing belt tensioner
I have a 1995 xj6....same problem. I replaced the belts, water pump, and the alternator. Still does it. As I play with the tension on the belt (belt that drives water pump, alternator) it goes away and comes back. If I remove the belt, the metal to metal screech stops. I then, with just the belt, turned the main pulley on the front of the engine, and there was the sound! The main pulley has 2 belts that run on it. Also, 2 pulley tracks. They SHOULD move simultaneously and be super meshed. But the rear one moves on its own under tension until it warms up and I guess, the bushing maybe expands. Now.....how do I fix it??????
SOURCE: loud chirping noise when acceleration pedal is
There is a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) for this problem:
Engine - Accessory Drive Belt Noise Diagnostics/Tool
08-06-01-008 03/27/2008
This particular vehicle had an issue with pulley alignment, particularly the power steering pulley. Take a look at the shaft the pulley is pressed onto. If the end of the shaft isnt flush with the pulley, it is out of line and will cause a squeal.
It is recommended that you discuss this TSB with your dealer (not local mechanic).
I hope this helps.

The first thing I would do is remove the serpentine belt and then start the car. If the noise is still present than I would agree that the noise is in the engine whether it be the timing chain, valve train, etc.
If the noise goes away than it is being caused by an accessory. Water pump, alternator, a/c compressor, p/s pump would be suspect.
You can run it for a couple of minutes with out the belt at most. This will keep the engine from overheating since the water pump will not be turning with the belt removed.
