Do you know where exactly on the tran it is located so I can try to find it

  • Gene Jun 10, 2017

    Hi Michael.
Sorry for the late response. The range selector is located on on top of the trans-axle, on the drivers side under the hood, towards the firewall. Here is a link to Advance Auto parts that shows the part you are looking for. Click on the link or copy and paste it. Hope this helps.

the PRNDL (wild guess A/T box) is bad.

2003 Buick century. After driving, shift to reverse, the starter kicks on. Can shift out of reverse and it will shut off and drive fine. Will not do it at startup. No NSS on tranny.

No NSS on tranny. the neutral safety switch is inside the transmission an it's called a Lever Assembly-Manual Shaft Detent with Internal Mode Switch (IMS) Connector 2 pin 16 , a white wire at the PCM - engine computer . Is park neutral in put to the PCM . Hooking up a factory or pofessional type scan tool to check this input before ripping the trans apart to replace this part is the ideal way to diagnose this problem . May even have a DTC stored .

I need to replace the NSS on a 1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport. It's a 4.0L 6cyl (straight line). Where is the NSS located on the vehicle?

?What do you mean NSS? Neutral Safety Switch? NSS is not an Abbreviation that I have ever heard of in 40 years. If you are talking about a Neutral Safety switch it is located in the transmission and would keep you from starting the vehicle unless it is in park or Neutral. Assuming you are talking about this and it's not the more common problem in the vehicles of the Linkage being out of adjustment it is located inside the transmission and can actually be replaced without any special tools or dropping the transmission in most cases.

Where is the neutral saftey switch located

For 2003 Buick Century 3.1L SFI OHV 6cyl NSS (Neutral Safet Switch) it will be mounted on the transmission shifting stud and lever, where the cables connect to the rod that runs down into the transmission (is a black box with a plug on the side).

Hope helps.

The backup lights on my 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee won't work. Have checked all the things I know how to except the NSS. Where is the NSS located and am I better off trying to clean/adjust it or replace it?

the backup light gets its power from the neutral safety switch on transmission.
\When you put vehicle in reverse it toggles the switch in the tranny to engage the backup lights.
if that plug has the wire broke off the backup lights will not work.

Check transmission light on....rpms up and down....code...po705...trans range sensor

I assume we're talking about a Jeep? Is your overdrive slipping out on it's own? Then going back to normal if you start the vehicle? Any trouble with the back-up lights?
Codes are just starting points. Honestly I would ty cleaning these sensors first(especially the NSS (indicative of the Check eng lite)...I think it's on the drivers side of the trans.), but be careful!!!! they are easy to break!!!! So before you go spending thousands on a new tranny spend a few $'s cleaning them (NSS gets really dirty), also the TPS, throttle position sensor (it's also a trans sensor).
P0705 Transmission Range Sensor Circuit malfunction (PRNDL Input) <=== NSS Switch.
The P0705 error means the computer sensed something wrong with the sensor. Ex: the vehicle is moving when the sensor indicates it's in park, or possibly a different gear,or it sensed the input shaft (engine) start turning when the sensor is indicating it's in drive.

The NSS is about $350 new, but you don't need to replace it as it costs nothing to clean and rebuild. Figure maybe an hour of labor, a socket set, an adjustable wrench, philips screwdriver to remove and disassemble it. You'll want some kind of solvent (not WD40), a wire brush, and/or sandpaper to clean up the contacts, and some oxyguard or di-electric grease (like the red grease they put on your battery posts to keep them from corroding?). to coat the contacts when your done. Spraying the shaft of the sensor with penetrating fluid ahead of time will help get it off.
NSS (neutral safety switch) >>> 12mm wrench, a crescent wrench and a screwdriver.
Located on the driver's side of the transmission. That's where I would start.
Sensors are TPS (Throttle Position Sensor), NSS, Speed (transmission speed, not drive speed).
Hope this helps, but without being there it's all I can do.
Good luck
Maybe this will help make some sense of it:
