1996 camaro 3.8 v6. Hard start, rough or won't hold idle, stalling at stop and while driving. Engine cuts out under acceleration, causing the car to accelegate roughly.

Exhaust has strong gas scent on first start. Very definite miss only on morning start. Have to feather peddle at 2-3000rpm till miss goes away. Some days are worse than others, but never goes away completely.

SOURCE: 1995 Chev S10 4.3L V6 rough idle and under power

This make/model has a chronic problem with EGR clogging. If you have a dashboard indicator showing "check engine" most likely it is a trouble code indicating and EGR (exhaust gas recirculator) valve problem. Symptoms are rough idle, and surging and stalls.

What happens is sediments from the exaust manifold get sucked up into the valve when it opens, then stick in the valve and keep it from closing. When the valve is open when it should be closed, the engine runs very rough.

I removed my egr and then dislodged the sediment (pea-sized debris) and then re-installed the valve. Three days later, the same "check engine" and same rough idle. I must have did this at least three or four more times.

What I found that gave me a permanent solution was an aftermarket filter gasket that keeps debris from clogging. I don't remember the name of the product, but a search for "EGR filter gasket" may lead you to the product.

Install the gasket between the EGR and the exhaust manifold and you should be good to go. Note: on 1995 and newer models, disconnecting the EGR from the wiring harness (common on R&R) may require the computer to be reprogramed.

A scan for trouble codes may point you in the right direction quickly, rather than hit & miss, with replacing parts. Some of the autoparts stores will scan for free, and your right where you need to be to get the right part at the same time.

SOURCE: check engine light is on, motor runs rough, sometimes stalls

Go to Advance or Auto Zone and have them run an obd scan on it and it will pin point why your light is on and could solve your problem. This is often done for free.

Hi

If your car stalled while you were driving it, look for an obvious reason first. Check to make sure you have fuel in the tank (if your gas gauge is working). Do not sit there and crank the car over, trying to get it to start, as you will quickly wear down the battery if it's not already bad.
Check the probable causes for this kind of problems:-
Ignition
The ignition system is composed of: ignition switch, neutral safety switch, security bypass, plugs, wires (if applicable) and a coil, or in the case of coil-over systems, many coils. The ignition is also tied into the computer. The crank and cam sensors tell the engine where top dead center is. Though these sensors do not usually cause a no start, if they break, the computer will go into "limp home mode," which allows you to get the car to a service station. The car will run badly, and may stall out on you. If the plug wires, plugs or coils are bad and are causing the engine to misfire, the engine will run rough. This may also cause the car to stall when driving. Generally, it will start back up, but it may be difficult to keep the car running.
Fuel
The fuel system is composed of a fuel pump, fuel filters, and fuel injectors or a carburetor. Some cars have a throttle body---this looks similar to a carburetor and has only one or two fuel injectors in the middle of it. The injectors feed all of the cylinders. In a multi-port system, each cylinder has its own injector. Should the fuel pump go bad, the car will stall while you are driving, as no fuel is getting pumped up to the engine. Bad injectors in a multi-port system will make the car run rough, which can cause a stalling situation, but generally, the car will restart.
Other Problems
There are other problems that can make a car stall---in the ignition system, the fuel system or in the drivetrain. If the timing belt breaks, the car will stall. If the computer itself stops working, the car will stall. Neither item will allow a car to start back up until it is repaired. All vehicles have an idle air motor or valve. The idle air is governed by the computer and changes the idle. When you turn on the air compressor, you use some engine resources. This makes the idle speed on the engine drop. The computer senses this drop and sends information to the idle air to turn up the idle so the car does not stall. If this part breaks, when you slow down to a stop or to turn a corner, the car may stall.
Because the running of a vehicle is complicated, there are many more things that can cause a vehicle to stall. These are the most common things that can cause a car to stall. Other things include wiring, fuses, relays, other sensors not working properly or at all, a bad alternator or a bad battery, or an overheating problem, just to name a few.

Also while driving engine will miss and seems transmission is slipping. My problems in these areas getting worse. Car has 44,000 miles. My car seems to cut off at random times..mainly after i have taken my foot off of the accelerator. What could be causing this problem ?

Here is the common cause of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

I am a Ford tech (35 years) and this is the cause of the problem in about 90% of the cars I see with this problem.

ROugh idle

there are 2 things that usually cause this, one is a dirty intake idle control valve and the other is hard engine mounts, I would say that both most likely apply to your car. try cleaning the intake with the following procedure from Ford.
