No, it has to be programmed by a locksmith to make it work in your vehicle. Call a locksmith and get it cared for so you can drive your toy. About $100 is what I last paid for this service, and I can fix anything. May as well do it ya know.

SOURCE: anti theft system . Had to replace ignition key

The dealer is right...the 89 firebird did not come with a chipped key antitheft system. You should never have had a key with a chip to begin with.

How do I replace the key lock cylinder in my 1997 Pontiac firebird trans am?

You will have to remove the air bag, steering wheel, clock spring, tension retainer, remove your upper and lower column trim covers, then you can get to the retainer for the old lock cylinder and remove it. You will have to unplug the connector with the orange and white wires for the chip reader for the VATTS system. I would suggest taking your new lock cylinder and your old key to a lock smith and having your new cylinder keyed to your old key so the correct chip will be read. It is usually easier to use your old key than it is to have a new key with the correct chip cut.

Sometimes when i try to start my 91 firebird h security light comes on and car wont start i waik away for 10 min and car starts

the most likely suspect is the ignition key cylinder, there are 2 small white wires that go bad. there is no cheap easy way to repair it. the lock cylinder will need to be replaced along with new keys. The new keys have to match the resistor chip in the old keys, so a locksmith would be the best choice for the job. Of course you will want it diagnosed coreectly before just replacing parts that may not be the problem but thats the most common.

I havw a 1997 firebird security light comes on and car won`t crank. Keyfob does nothing. Could it be the antitheft module?

Been there: had broken wiring in the key cylinder -- wouldn't read the 'chip'. Dealer dinged me for a whole assembly, meaning a new key-cut .. and new IGN keys !
Learned later that I 'could' have bypassed the chip-reader with $1.59 of resistors from RadioShack ..

I have a 94 pontiac firebird the security light comes on now i wait 3 minutes and it will start sometimes i have to wait 2or3 times to get it to start when the light is on it does nouthing

(from autostalk.com)
I'm pretty sure I know what the problem is, if you have the keys with
the small 'computer chip' on the black plastic part then your car is
equipped with a sensor in the ignition (where you actually put the key
into) that is supposed to be able to sense the key, to make sure its
the real key. In many cases, the wires from this sensor become loose or
faulty and will trip that light.

Firebird Won't start

Very possible its the neutral safety switch. Try putting the car in neutral and turning the key. If it starts then I'd investigate the linkage and/or neutral safety switch. Best of luck.
