Find the cause of no brake lights and the park lock will start working, it is powered by the brake light circuit.

You have a bad switch at the brake pedal. Or a loose wire. Try light pulling on the wires on the switch at the brake pedal under the dash. They should be tight and secure. If tight and secure the switch could be bad.

SOURCE: No tail lights or brake lights/must start car in neutral

Look up at the top of the brake pedal under dash and you should see a switch hooked to the pedal with a LG/R and LG wire. You should have power on the LG/R wire then when you depress pedal it should have power on the LG then.
Another question does the 3rd or high mount brake lamp illuminate when pedal is depressed?

SOURCE: No Brake Lights, unable to switch from park to drive

It is not the multifunction switch. The power feed goes thru the brake switch before the multi function. You have no power the the brake switch because your shift interlock is not allowing you to shift it. I'll look up the wiring diagram and repost with a solution.

SOURCE: 1998 Lincoln Town Car: No turn signals, 4 way flash, brake lights

If only your brake light in middle of rear window works then your other bulbs are bad. If brake lights all work in the back than bulbs are good. If you put turn signal on right or left and the bulbs light in front and back then you need to change multifunction light control box under dash. My understanding is it cost $600 new. So I would try used.

My 2003 windstar ford van stuck in park

a simple trick to finding a short is to replace the blown fuse with a pair of spade terminals, then use small jumper wires to connect them to a 12 volt light bulb. A brake light bulb works well. When the circuit is live and the short is present, the bulb will be full brightness and hot so be sure it's not laying on the carpet or against a plastic door panel. Now you can unplug electrical connectors and move things around to see what makes the short go away. When it does, the bulb will get dim or go out.
Either way the shifter is stuck in Park. To get my car out of Park I turned to key to the start position, or actually started the car. Then turn the key back one position. Without pressing the brake pedal you can shift out of park. You then can shift to neutral, start the car and get moving, at least you can move the vehicle or get it to a repair shop to replace the brake light switch and the shifter release solenoid if needed

My 1999 Ford Windstar won't shift out of Park after I start the engine. If I just turn the key part way and don't start the engine, I can shift into neutral and start and drive. So it's not the...

The first thing to check is that you have working brake lights. If they are not working then the solenoid that pulls the park pin back to unlock the shifter is not going to get power from the brake light circuit.

2005 ford explorer gear shift stuck in park

Check to see if your brake lights are working. If not, you have a blown fuse for the brake lights or a bad brake light switch on the brake pedal arm bracket.
When you turn the key to ON, a solenoid energizess and lock the sihft interlock. When you step on the brake to shift out of park, It de-energizes the relay so you can move the sift lever. You should hear a click noise with they key in ON position and you step on the brake pedal. TRy this witohout starting the engine & listen.
The bypass emergency procedure is in your owner manual under sift interlock in the index.
But, usually you turn the key to OFF (first click) and then step on the brake & shift out of park. Then start car in neutral and drive away.
It works because you did not energize the shift lock solenoid, by not turning key to ON.

report results and please rate, thanks.

Also, check the wire going to the brake switch under the dash. It may have just come off.

Car won't shift out of park

It osunds like the shift interlock solenoid is not unlocking when you step on the brake, do you hear a click nosie?

Try the emergency bypass. turn key to OFF, step on brake, shift out of park into neutral. Then start car and drive away. do not put back in park until you get to destination. Or you will have to shut off, turn key to OFF, and apply brake, and shift to neutral again.

report back. check all fuses. see chart in owner manaul

95 Ford windstar won't shift out of park when the brake is depressed, no brake lights, bulbs and fuses are good

Sounds like the brake light switch on the brake pedal is bad. Try turning the key just off the locked position, shift into neutral and start the engine. If you turn the key to the to far to the on position the shift interlock engages and will only release when the brake lamp switch activates.
