Have your fuel injectors ohm meter tested for a dead one. You can do this yourself with an ohm meter. Just unplug each injectors electrical connection plug and touch the leads to the pins for a reading. the bad one will be a much lower reading of the rest. Keep track of reading on each cylinder. Replace the dead injector.

Have you made sure the idle has gone through a computer reset after a battery disconnect? From the manual: Because your vehicle's engine is electronically controlled by a computer, some control conditions are maintained by power from the battery. When the battery is disconnected or a new battery is installed, the engine must relearn its idle conditions before your vehicle will drive properly. To begin this process: 1. Put the gearshift in P (Park) (automatic transmissions) or the neutral position (manual transmissions), turn off all accessories and start the vehicle. 2. Let the engine idle for at least one minute. 3. The relearning process will automatically complete as you drive the vehicle. ² If you do not allow the engine to relearn its idle, the idle quality of your vehicle may be adversely affected until the idle is eventually relearned.

P0301 - Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected.
Possible Causes:
- Improper spark plug at cylinder #1
- Insufficient compression at cylinder #1
- Incorrect fuel pressure
- The injector circuit is open or shorted at cylinder #1
- Fuel injector #1 may be faulty
- Intake air leak at cylinder
Possible Solutions:
- Perform Injector Service
- Replaced Spark Plug #1
- Replaced Injector #1
- Replaced Ignition Coil #1
Being you have a heavy gas smell I would look into the injectors. If injector #1 is over producing it can cause a misfire. Test your compression and fuel pressure.

I have same problem on 2003 toyota tacoma 2.7L EXACT SAME CODES
SOURCE: I have 2002 chevy avalanche,
Mine did the same thing...at 42F degrees, run bad. After it warm up, it would be fine. This would only happen in the winter. It would throw a code saying it was lean in Bank 1 or 2.
The issue is a contraction of the intake gasket due to the cold weather, when it contracts, it leaks air. There is a new, improved gasket now from GM, or get a Felpro from major auto stores and it will work fine. I consistently had the problem every winter, and this has fixed the problem for the last 3-4 years.
