I replaced my transmission on my 1985 s10 to one that has a electronic speedometer. But my s10 has a cable operated speedometer.

Yes there is a gear in the tranny that can be the problem. You will have to remove it and examine it to be sure that it's the problem, then there is the next problem, that will ultimately be a dealer item. I hope you have a Toyota dealership close by that you can get one at.
I will Cc you at the email addres that you posted, but we should keep all communication through Fixya, so if anyone else is having the same problem they can view it here.

Not sure how mechanicaly minded you are but you can do an easy check with the minimum of work.Assuming your speedo is run by a cable and not a transducer.Undo cable at gear box end and try to spin the plastic gear by hand should be free of binding or any other restriction.if you have a dual speed drill attach to plastic gear turn it on and see what the speedo is doing Leave running long enough to determine wether the problem is outside the gear box and not the expensive option. You can remove the plastic gear and completely remove the inner core to check its condition. If the core is at fault you can take the core out of the replacement cable and slide it back up the origional cable.Make sure you twist the core when putting back in as the ends of the core are square. This saves you the trouble of pulling the dash apart.

there is a clamp that either needs to be removed (10mm bolt holds it on) or on some transmisions it's an O-Ring that allows you to remove the speedo gear.
remove the speedo gear and bring it to the parts store so they can match up the identical amount of teeth so that the new one will not make your speedo run fast or slow. The gears are color coded however i have seen many instances where aftermarket ones have thier own color scheme and the convert charts are inaccurate so count the teeth

Well I would verify the trany speed gear is "ate up" first, theres only one 10mm bolt that holds it in place, sure the area around the speedo cable is very CLEAN before removing it any dirt in there would make things bad to say the least. If you pull the cable out the gear is attached to the cable if it looks good then put it back together and remove your cluster (speedo and other gauges inside) I suggest you pick up a repair manual at a big auto store on MK1-MK2 vdubs (82-92) to explain how to remove speedo cable from back of cluster its kinda of tricky getting your fingers back there and pressing it together to get it to release. Once out drive the car and see if that cable is turning from the inside if it is then its your speedo gauge that is faulty. Grab a cluster from a scrap yard, if that cable is NOT turning then the gearing inside the trany is messed up which would mean taking the trany apart to repair it. If that was the case you would be cheaper to replace the whole trany with a used one. Good luck
