well if your engine turns over but will not fire you may have a bad ignition coil so please locate it and check for voltage at small wires attached to the coil but DO NOT CHECK FOR VOLTAGE WHRE THE WIRE GOES FROM IT TO THE ENGINE.

How could you need a diagram for 3 simple wires?
There is only the large wire out to the starter that bolts on with a nut, the small wire plugged in from the dash, and a ground wire that has a nut bolting it to the shell.

The rotor cap (i am not sure if you meant distributor cap or rotor button, but ill answer them both) on a 1989 Volvo 740 is located directly at the back of the engine block, connected to the cam shaft. it is the orange plastic device that the spark plug wires snap into. the rotor button is the orange plastic part found inside of the distributor. to get to the rotor button you would have to remove the distributor with a 8 or 10mm wrench (sorry I cant remember which), there are 3 bolts to remove. it should take less then 5mins to do this. Check the fuse for fuel pump... Alot of volvo have problems with the fuse's

i cannot remember but i think there is a starter relay, its located in the engine bay the wire color is the same as its is on the starter motor, and feeds back to the relay, in the relay box in engine bay if this model dont have the relay as some models did not have it fitted and it was a straight from the ignition it can cross over on the ignition switch, and that would need to be replaced, or changed to button press, were by cutting the wire on the starter wire on the ignition and feeding it to a switch button.

Fuel pump is located on drivers side below rear driver door area near rear axle. Fuel filter is located next to pump.

I had a friend who owns a small dealership make a call and he received a wiring schematic that showed that the radio has an external audio amp located under the dash below the steering wheel. The amp was shorted.
