I cant get my oil pump off of my 98 4runner ive taken out all the bolts and disconnected the sump line

looks like a tough job ahead

taking the sump off ?...motor in the engine bay

could try undoing plenty and lift the body up

if you cant get clearance under neath with motor in the engine bay
motor will have to come out


if trying with motor in the engine bay
lots of drive train in the way ..
undo engine mounts
support the motor .... even lift motor a bit
for clearance from steering gear and chassis ,suspension etc
to get the sump off

Probably not the answer you want to hear, but here it is if the engine is still in the car. then not gong to be able to get it off. reason is the oil pump sump screen is what's keeping it on. the oil pan has a devided section in it that the sump screen goes under.sorry to be the bearer of bad news!

Place a jack with suitable protection under sump so as not to damage sump and lift just a little to relieve just enough tension to remove through bolt onto body....Regards Johngee

inside the sump on the oil pump. you need to remove the power steering pump then all the bolts on the sump, some are a little difficult, you may have to separate the sump from a baffle, then you 'll see the oil pump poking through, 2 bolts to remove then twist it and pull the whole thing out.

The Oil Pump is located in the sump of the engine. It has a common issue with the Oil Pump Bolt, which holds the sprocket driven by a chain to the oil pump. On some models this has been known to work loose due to not being loctited. The replacement Pump Bolt has a dab of loctite. My 99 bolt was loose. You'll need a new sump seal too. Parts are about £20's worth.

Hi Michaelma692, keep in mind that the oil pick up sump is situated at the very bottom of the oil pan, which probably means u have to raise the engine quite a bit to drop the pan low enough to clear the oil pick up sump (if the oil pan is 6inches deep, for example, u will need to drop the pan 6 inches to clear). Let me know if this isn't the problem. Curt

end of that bracket is another bolt....careful of oil pump drive shaft now as you take the assembly down..good luck

you have to take off the sump under the engine

if u want to do it its a big job but here....
0,, there might be a cross member in the way ,,have to take it off or get around it.
1,,take out the lttle bolt on sump
2,, let all the oil out
3,, take out oil filter
4,, undo the sump (like 15,10mm nuts
5,,oil pump is right there 2 bolts to undo 12 or 14 mm
6,, take out
7,, replace
8 put all back togeather

lower the sub fram slightly then drop off front pipe to manifold bots
remove drive shaft housing bolts then the lower air con bolts remove lower sump
then remove oil pump and you should be able to rmove sump
