CAUTION: Do not pull on the ignition wire as it may separate from the connector in the boot.
I appreciate your answering my question. I understand the procedure, and have removed all the stuff that is listed, but I just can't get the valve cover off. It appears to not have enough clearance to the rear against the firewall and all the hoses in the rear. Is there a trick to getting it off? I thought the motor mount would not have to be unbolted, but now I am wondering if that is not true.
I posted a excerpt from the manufactures procedures. However i prefer to raise the engine, remove the motor mount and then let it all the way down. in any case its a real trick to get the valve cover back in with the gasket in place. i usually put a tiny bit of rtv in several spots then set the gasket and let it dry before trying to install the v cover. Good luck bud.

You will first need to remove the plastic piece behind the inner door handle that you use to pull the door shut with and there should be a 10mm bolt inside there behind the insulation. The plastic cover behind the inner door lever handle will need to come out. It's only in with clips. Remove the reflective lens on the end of the panel and you will see a phillips head screw inside. It's a long screw so be ready for many turns to get it out. Next, your power window controls will need to come out and they are only snapped into place but be careful with them because plastic prongs can be broken off if not pried out in the right direction. The same goes for the door lock switch. Unplug both once out. You will also see a triangle plastic piece (can break easily) towards the front top side of the panel. Make sure it clears it's way out when removing the panel. The rest of the panel is held up with downward facing plastic clips. Sounds hard but really it's all pretty simple. Study the back of the panel before putting it back on and take your time.

no such thing as a valve cover valve. you have a leakey valve cover and you replace the gasket, if you do one do both they come in a kit. also to do that job you have to do the intake gasket and plenum gasket as well. about $150.00 in parts maybe 5 hours labor

Sounds like a slight leak on the cylinder head gasket or timing gear seals. Remove the timing cover plate to give you a better view of the problem. If its something like the heads, then get a professional to do it. If its in the timing section, you can do it yourself with the help of a Hanes or Chiltons manual for your car. Check the oil pan. That one is common on camrys.
