SOURCE: My liftgate is closed but my sensor is telling me it's not.
sounds like a defective liftgate latch assembly..ajar switch is part of latch..dealer item
SOURCE: 1993 jeep grand cherokee liftgate wont open
i just fixed the liftgate on my 1998 JGC Laredo this afternoon: door handle, when lifted, does not release latch mechanism
here is a solution that may apply to you...
1. open liftgate flipper window
2. remove door panel screws from inside
3. use coat hanger to pull up on locking mechanism arm (at the bottom) to release latch mechanism
4. with door now open, remove remaining door panel screws to completely remove door panel
5. adjust the positioning of the latch rod in its retaining clip (open clip and reposition rod)
in my case, I had took much slack and repositioned the rod by a few threads (about 1/8th inch) in the clip.
be sure rod is seated fully in the clip and that the clip is securely closed
5. test your fix before re-assembling everything
want a long, detailed version? let me know.
SOURCE: how to replace liftgate support
Hi ... You need two people, two new gas struts a small screw driver and a thirteen mill open end spanner.....
Change one at a time with the second person supporting the tailgate, dependant on what type is fitted the struts will have a metal "c" clip that needs to be removed at both ends on the ball joint sockets, prise the clips out and remove the strut, and replace in reverse order.... if you have the struts with the ball and sockets at each end you need to support the tailgate with your by now long suffering partnre and undo the nut and socket in the body and tailgate.... they, once loosened will come out easily..... just make sure that when refitting you dont cross threads... repeat same on the other side and then give friend a cold beer..... hope this helps.....
