These are ideas only as there are many things that could improve gas mileage.
When was the last time you had a tune up? (Spark plugs check for bad sensors . When was the Air filter changed..
do you always check the air pressure in the tires. Low tires can bring your mileage down five miles per gallon or more.
Do you drive with fast starts and stops.
Do you run short trips? Short trips does not let the engine warm up to the right traveling temperature. I live in town and I get about 15 miles per gallon in town but if I drive 20 miles or more I get 24 or more with my Buick.
You will get less mileage if you drive in real cold weather.

your idle engine speed is set too low. there is a idle speed screw on your carb if it is a carb model or on your throtle body

i think you might have disconnected some vacuum hoses near and around your air filter.

Did you replace the wires? if not you may have broken a couple of wires. Not sure what fire wire is unless you mean the spark plug wires. Also did it do this before you replaced the plugs? need to know.

1st thing is to clean that throttle body with throttle body cleaner, should be nice and shiny. This is the most common fuel robber in TB's. Removing it to clean it is best, but not critical. Careful, the butterfly is very sharp and will cut you.
2. Replace your spark plugs with A/C Delco 41-103, these will give you better gas mileage and better idle than others.
3. Replace your 02 sensor that's upstream, in the engine compartment. Try to stay away from Bosch if possible.
4. Make sure your air cleaner is clean
5. Make sure your tires are at the correct pressure.
6. Replace fuel filter
7. If you really want to go the extra mile, spend $9.99 on a can of Seafoam and put a 1/3 can of it in the brake booster vacum line, this will **** into the intake and clean the deposits out. The other 2/3's I usually put in the gas tank, so replace your fuel filter AFTER you have run the Seafoam through it. Otherwise it will clog up your new filter with the gunk that it cleaned from the bottom of the gas tank. Look up Seafoam on the net to see how it's done.
These things will help you go the pump less often.
