SOURCE: 4 wheel drive
there is a way to do that.....all you have to do is go get the manual locking hubs and switch it over...not that hard....did it to a early 90s f150....pretty easy.

SOURCE: Automatic transmission leaks on my 2000 Rodeo
If you have never serviced the transmission, it just may be time to have the transmission fluid and filter to be replaced if the transmission fluid is leaking from the transmission pan. If it's leaking from the rear of the transmission where the drive shaft goes in to, then it's the rear seal from the transfer case and the seal needs to be replaced and the transfer case topped off with fluid. If the fluid is leaking from the front of the transmission where the engine connects to the transmission than it's a good chance that it's the torque converter or front pump main seal. The other place that it could be leaking from is the transmission oil lines from the transmission to the cool at the radiator. Please let me know if it's leaks worst when the engine is running or only when your parked for a few hours. Keep me posted, be glad to help.

Your truck has a A4LD transmission. The older ones had major problems. What i believe is happening with yours is the converter is locking up intermittently. 1st-4th are actual gears for 5th(overdrive) the converter locks. I had the same problem as well as did alot of people I spoke with. I solved it by getting a used A4LD out of a '92 ranger with a 3.0L motor (these transmissions had some upgrades to deal with a number of problems including the one you are talking about.) You will need to swap bell-housings (this requires the pump to be shimmed properly,I paid a shop $100 to install the pump ,with is attached to the back of the bell-housing) There are only 2 kinds of A4LD one for floor shift and 1 for column shift, make sure you get the right one.Good luck.
