SOURCE: the lift gate will not open with the release

I'm hoping you found an answer to this already, but if not, here it is. Try looking at fuse # 16 in the fuse panel under the driver side dash. It should be a blue 15 Amp fuse & it controls the cigarette lighter & lift gate, amongst other things. My guess is that you will find it has popped & needs to be replaced. It's an easy job to do if you have a fuse holder or a pair of needle nose pliers. Out with the old, in with the new. IMHO, this is a poor deign by Lincoln in the fact that the change holder is right next to the cigarette lighter & if you happen to drop a penny or dime into the lighter/outlet, it pops the fuse. This can be a common problem if you don't keep the lighter in there, & use the outlet for cell phone charger, ipod, etc. This has happened to me a couple times, so I bought a small box of fuses & keep them in the glove compartment now, just in case it should happen while I'm out & about somewhere. Hope this helps!...//TJ

SOURCE: display console

There is a switch in the lift gate latch that closes when the gate is closed and turns off the light, this switch is defective, replace it and the light will go off.

SOURCE: Lift Glass opens sporadically

Give latch mechanism a good spray with white lithium grease or similar also, in case latch is sticking slightly.

SOURCE: 1997 Grand Cherokee. Tail gate wont open. Handle

These rear hatches have a cheesy rod and clip setup. You have to remove the panel from inside, you have to loosen the screws around the hatch and pull it away and reach in down toward the latch and open it that way so you can get the 2 screws out of the bottom easier. There is a peice of plastic in these that's a dust barrier, try not to tear it up too badly, and when you go to put it back, I use a spray adhesive to stick it back on while I put the panel back on. after you get it open you will see a rod with what looks like threads hanging there attached to nothing, and a little thing that has 2 notched areas and a clip to hold that rod into those 2 notches. bend the clip down to make it tighter and then force the rod back into place that should fix your problems. If that's all in place then it's the latch mechanism, usually they can't be fixed because parts aren't available, just have to buy a new one and put it in.

Testimonial: "Thanks very much, I'll give it a try. It's a bugger getting the inside panel off, I tried a few times unsucessfully."

Why does the alarm on my 2000 jeep grand cherokee not go off when the lift gate is opened

Hi Gloria, I'm glad to help!

Gloria, the most likely cause for no alarm when the liftgate is opened is usually because the controller does not see the liftgate open. 2 things can cause this. (1) The alarm switch on the liftgate could be bad. (2) The wiring going to the switch could be broken somewhere in the wiring. On the Jeeps its usually broken where the wiring is bending all the time between the liftgate and the body of the vehicle. If you pull the rubber insulator out you can then check the wiring. If the wiring is good then the next step would be to try an alarm switch for the liftgate. Hope this helps and have an awesome day Gloria.

It seems that I have a short in my wires. My tail lights wont stay on. My problem is the lift gate is stuck and I cannot access the lights. When u use the remote to open the doors it makes a funny sound....

You should be able to remove the trimpanel on the lift-gate. then at the location of the striker in the middle-bottom of lift-gate you should be able to access a rod. Grab the rod with pliers, if pliers won,t fit the rod connects to a metal lever attached to the striker assembly, pry the lever away from the striker and this should release you gate....Good Luck!!!

1994 Jeep Grand cherokee rear lift gate

Well My 94 Jeep Grand Cherokee had the same problem and we had to just cut into the lift gate panel from the inside. It required cutting plastic but with a 94 looks arent everything and a working lift gate was worth it. But then we pealed back this black plastic mat under the panel and lifted up on the release bar(verticle bar that lifts the latch) and once we got it open we adjusted a little clamp that had slipped. Dont adjust it too much or when u lock it it wont lock! But sorry i dont know the name of the parts. But then u can screw the panel back in and it wont look to bad besides some cuts.

Jeep Cherokee 2000

these are totally separate circuits and therefore 2 different issues and unrelated, most likely u will need a window lift motor to fix the rear window issue, as far as the rear wiper goes a common issue is the wiring breaking from years of opening and closing the lift gate, the rear wiper most likely isn't getting any power as a result of this wiring damage.
