99 Mitsubishi Galant, engine is over heating. Where is thermostat located?

I have a 4 cyl engine in my galant and the thermostat is found by following the LOWER radiator hose. You will need to remove the battery in order to gain access to the thermostat housing mounting bolts. There is a video on Youtube.com showing the removal and replacement of the thermostat and radiator for a 1999 mitsubishi galant.

Change the thermostat in the galant.

1. Raise the front of your Mitsubishi Galant with a jack and lower onto jack stands, or use wheel ramps. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery. Drain the coolant into a suitable container by opening the drain plug on the bottom of the radiator.
2. Step 2 Follow the upper radiator hose to where it meets the engine at the thermostat housing. Loosen the clamp at the engine end of the radiator hose and pull the hose off the thermostat housing.
3. Step 3 Remove the two bolts on the thermostat housing cover and pull off the cover. Note the position of the old thermostat and remove it from the thermostat housing. Place a rag in the thermostat housing and scrape any gasket residue from the inside of the thermostat housing cover.
4. Step 4 Take out the rag and insert the new thermostat in the same position as the old one, with the spring-side facing into the engine. Install the new gasket or o-ring, depending on the type of thermostat you are installing. Note that most late 1980s and early 1990s Galant models use a thermostat gasket.
5. Step 5 Replace the thermostat housing cover and tighten the bolts. Re-attach the radiator hose and tighten the clamp. Fill the radiator with new coolant, or use the coolant drained from your Galant earlier if it's relatively new and clean.
6. Step 6 Start your Mitsubishi Galant and run with the heater on high until it reaches operating temperature. Make sure the heater is blowing warm air to ensure the thermostat is working properly. Check for leaks and tighten the radiator hose clamps if you detect any.

Water pump chang on mitsubishi Galant 2.5 V6

Waterpump replacement requires removal and replacement of your timing belt. Because of this it is not your typical do it yourself repair. Engine timing is critical, and not having your belt set correctly can lead to catastrophic engine damage.

You can purchase a service manual at your local parts store to get an idea of what is involved, however this being an interference engine you should leave this job to a professional if you are uncertain enough about your abilities that you need to ask for help on it. The cost to replace the waterpump is far far less than the cost to repair a engine that had an incorrectly set timing belt.
