I have a 87 Toyota tercel and I think the engine seized up is there anyway to fix without having to tear motor out and replace?

That would really depend on what the issue is.
You could remove the cylinder head and the oil pan with the engine in the car, but not the crankshaft.

How do I check for a blown head gasket on my 1990

Pretty much same answer as I gave for 87 Reliant see below. Shops have equipment to do cylinder leakage test. Do basic stuff below before doing last test ...cylinder leakage...which costs $$$.

Main point you are losing antifreeze/water. Check to see if you have water on the dipstick mixed in with oil. If so...probably a head gasket. If oil looks normal..... Before you do any test, tighten every hose connection. Check for loose connection into antifreeze reservoir. Sometimes there are small cracks on top which lets out pressure from cooling system. Look for leaks on water pump and radiator. Look at spot where you park the car...any liquid on floor? Not sure?..Put piece of cardboard under car to see if liquid is dripping from car. No leaks?...Start with a pressure test of the system. The pressure test is simply equipment that replace the radiator cap, a hand pump connected to it then air is pumped into cooling system. You watch the gauge to see if pressure is dropping. If pressure does not drop ..problem is most like a worn radiator pressure cap or stuck thermostat.. Do not buy the kind with button on cap to push down and release pressure. get original type and correct pressure. If overheating still, thermostat could be stuck, replace. Overheating of engine causes vapor lock, bubbles in fuel, which causes car to stall and kill. When cools off, fuel cools down and fuel will flow through fuel system again. Large amount of oil disappearing with overheating also sounds like head gasket or cracked head....Tighten up all bolts to gaskets, look for oil leaks on garage floor or driveway. If engine has developed a miss when running, pull plugs out and look for wet fouled plug. If antifreeze leaking into cylinder...plug tip will be whitish, if oil leaking into cylinder, grimey oil fouled. Do compression test on cylinder that is fouled and that will pinpoint if bad head gasket or cracked head. When doing compression test, radiator cap is removed and you listen to hear bubbles in radiator from the cylinder leaking into cooling system. 87 Reliant not worth pulling engine apart if head gasket or cracked head. Best oil treatment to reduce oil consumption is "Engine Restore" Used on my 58 Impala 348 tri power for 28 years. If I did not add it after oil changes it used oil and smoked....I swear by it for ANY engine after 100,000 miles.

Trying to take off the head on my 87 jeep / on the manifolds is there a procedure or trick like take one off then the other to make it easier for a novice

It depends on which manifold you are wanting to remove. You and remove the intake without removing the exhaust. That being a 87 model it has vacuum lines running everywhere. I worked for Chrysler dodge and jeep. The 87 and 88 year models were a pain because all the vacuum lines. It does matter if the engine is a 6 or 4 cylinder. The 4 cylinder in the exact same engine block with the back 2 cylinders cut off it basically. Either way the 4.0 or the 2.5 mainly 4.0 liter jeep engine is probably one of the best engines ever built. Just never ever run one hot. Almost the only thing that can kill one. Ok start by looking at all the intake and exhaust manifold bolts front front to back. You will see that some are exhaust manifold bolts only and the other share responsibilities of holding the exhaust and intake to the heads. Before that you will need to remove the power steering belt and pump from the intake and bracket that connect the ps pump to the engine block under the intake and this is one of the hardest things to do. Sometimes it\'s easier to remove the air filter and box completely out of the way. Be amazed how much room it will open up. Remove all vacuum, electrical, throttle cables, and fuel lines from the intake. Big Hint (to make everything easier you will need to have several different length extensions and most importantly a really good quality 9/16 swivel socket 3/8 drive and a good light.) All intake and exhaust bolts are 9/16. After everything is moved out of the way look at the bolts that connect the intake and or the exhaust manifold to the head. You will be able to see which is holding which. There are bolts that under the intake as well. When putting intake back on make to put the bottom on first. The head usually has 2 small dowels to help you line it up. After you line the dowels to the manifold it will fit perfectly. Put a bolt and cone shaped washer on the center of the manifold so it will hold the top in place. The dowels will automatically hold the bottom. WARNING make sure the the intake is sealed flush with the head. If not you can have what is called a "runaway motor". The motor will literally destroy itself before you can cut it off. Because if the intake is not seal to the head properly. The engine will suck air through the gap and provide the oxygen to mix with the fuel and compression when you crank the engine. It will be like having the throttle stuck wide open. Happened to me once. Luckily I still had my hand on the ignition switch and was able to cut it off quickly. Anyway I hope this helps you. Don\'t be afraid to do this yourself. This is probably one of the easiest engines there is to work on. Just remember one thing "KISS" Keep It Simple Stupid. And If you get frustrated "walk away for a few minutes". Good luck. They only way to own a Jeep, is to know how to work on a Jeep!
