About a year ago my 2000 ml 300 starting blowing hot air. Just before this happened I noticed that the temperature controller seemed to malfunction while I was switching from heating in the morning to cooling in the afternoon. How do I tell if the problem is the temperature controller or the air door actuator?
You can check the hoses and pipes in the engine compartment after you run it, check for condensation or cold pipes near the firewall. Of course you need to turn the engine off to eliminate the danger of checking it with your hands. There is a mode selector and a blend door that selects hot and cold air. These are inside the cab near the fan motor and it is the blend door that you are going to have an issue with if the pipes are cold and the air is hot. There is a blend door actuator and it could also be the door itself is stuck or broken off. It would be nice to know the make, model and year to tell you more.

the a/c condenser has a fan in front ( there is actually 2 fans if you sit on the car it will be fan on right side ) if this fan does not
come on immediately when you are parked and engine in idle
there is a problem with power to it, or motor failure. If you drive it
on the highway and a/c operates fine that's because air is circulating though condenser (thats what the fan is supposed to do at idle or slow traffic)

if you are sure that your heater core is not restricted. then try to recalibrate the climate control panel. if your a/c system is not working then DO NOT ATTEMPT THE RECALIBRATION it will make your lights on climate control panel flash codes forever.
to reclaibrate the climate control panel just have the engine running. turn the mode to vent, the temp to cold, the blower on high, then press and hold the rear wiper wash and wiper buttons at the same time until the panel lights up then wait about 2 minutes for it to run completly when completed. turn off ignition and then restart the engine try to se if you have heat again. if it doesntwork post the codes it gives you after the calibration test.

Sounds like your temperature actuator is not moving or your temp door is broken. On max a-c ,coolant is shut off to your heater core allowing only cold air in.

If you touched any of the A/C controls within 45 seconds of starting your Suburban (after the battery change), you messed up the 'calibration mode' of the HVAC. Pull the HVAC fuse (10amp) under the hood, and pull the two adjacent fuses (30 and 10amp) under the dash listed as 'climate control' in the manual. Push the fuses back in, restart your car, but DONT TOUCH ANY of the A/C controls for 90 seconds. I bet the A/C starts working again normally.
