No country told or engine,
well if it scans ok (PID ECT 200f.) engine hot normal.
then no need to find it.!! if reads wrong most 16 year old thermostats are bad , life span is 7 years, says makers.
if you learn to use a $15 IR thermal gun you see the truth
and lay real blame on that reading only. learn this?
if he IR gun show near 200f and ECT cans 200 then the ECT did not lie did it/? no. learn to use tools and learn to scan first
then HUNTS Last .
and is near the thermostat on most engines
you failed to say which of many engines is in your car, to the blind helper, to fix any car learn first what is under-hood.
or we all fail. hard. blind as bats in a silly text box.
some engines run a reverse flow radiator, and is unlike any other cars.. see how engines are not the same?
USA cars
here it is RTM, its all there to read 24/7, all that and all engines USA.

SOURCE: I need to find out
normally this located by the thermastat housing if you follow the hose upper radiator hose to the thermastat housing there is a little plug with a wire on it and that is the temp sensor
SOURCE: they tell me I need a coolant temperature sensor
you might have 2 coolant sensors one for the gauge and one for pcm, and if you stop by a part store like autozone they will give you a print out of locations of one or both. did they tell you that you only had one ? ask the part store how many they are showing for your car when you go they will tell you. then find out which one they want you to replace

NOTE
The "left" side of the engine is the driver's side.
The Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor is a thermistor (a device which changes resistance or voltage as temperature changes). The sensor detects the temperature of engine coolant and provides a corresponding signal to the PCM (Powertrain Control Module - aka "the car's computer").
The ECT sensor is mounted in the following locations (small Ford engines):
1.8L engines: in the cylinder head
1.9L engines: threaded into the heater hose inlet pipe
2.0L engines: at the left rear of the engine

(1) Partially drain the engine cooling system using a clean container. If coolant is in good condition, retain for reuse.
(2) Disconnect the battery ground cable.
(3) Disconnect the electrical wiring connector from the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor.
(4) Remove the retaining clip and the ECT sensor.
Fig. 1 Escort ZX2 ECT sensor - The retaining clip is removed (at the solid arrow). Withdraw ECT sensor by gently wiggling/pulling in the direction of the dashed arrow.
To install:
NOTE
Coat the ECT sensor O-ring with clean coolant prior to installation.
(1) Replace the retaining clip and the ECT sensor.
(2) Connect the electrical wiring connector from the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor.
(3) Connect the battery ground cable.
(4) Refill the engine cooling system. An inexpensive plastic "Radiator Funnel" will help with this task.

Here's the location of the engine coolant temperature sensor, it is Usually On or very near the thermostat housing. http://ww2.justanswer.com/uploads/AM/amdhcds/2013-01-27_010915_ect.jpg
