2002 Chevy Malibu fan isn't working when the engine is hot but runs when ac is on but still doesn't cool the engine enough

I have a 2002 Chevy Malibu and I just got the thermostat replaced and but my car is still leaking coolant and getting hot. I think I've connected it to the fans not coming on when my engine would be getting hot. They come on fine when I turn on the ac but my car still gets too hot. I've checked the relays and they're all working. I've also realized that the heater only blows out cold air

The water may not be circulating enough to heat the coolant sensor or may have air in the system . A faulty new coolant sensor or stuck closed thermostat can contribute to this . Have you hooked a scan tool with live data to read what temperature the sensor is reading ?

Radiator restriction and water pump impeller failure can cause this also .

Your fan motor might be fried... and check your coolant, they have a tool which measures its ability to do its job. you might need a radiator flush but start small... THe tool to make sure you anti-Freeze is good is very cheap. By one and test it (it tells you how to test it) then check your fuzes for your Radiator fans in your owners manual. if that is good take your fans off and have them tested. you need to get your fans working again even if you need to by new. And see if your car needs a coolant flush, ( a true flush not a drain and fill

SOURCE: cooling fans on 2001 chevy malibu will not come on unless ac on

the relays control circuit is grounded by ECM (computer) . to check this make sure the is hot enough for the fans to be commanded on by computer and check to see if you have voltage at relay and it has ground from computer . you may need ECM.
good luck

SOURCE: I have a 2003 VW Jetta 1.8t that is overheating.

Assuming engine tune / mechanical condition is not the cause of the overheating:-
Ensure cooling fan is cutting in at the appropriate engine temperature - check operation of the fan controlling relay,
Ensure fan switching control temperature sensor is serviceable,
Ensure cooling system is filled properly, taking care to bleed out air where necessary,
Ensure coolant pressure cap is of correct rating and in serviceable condition,
Check coolant hose on suction side of waterpump is not softened and collapsing at engine revs above idle,
Ensure radiator core is not blocked or cooling airflow inhibited by insects etc.

SOURCE: 2002 malibu runs hot.

Sounds like you have a faulty head gasket or maybe a cracked head. This can cause overheating and the check engine light to come on.The code for the o2 sensor is probably caused by coolant getting into the exhaust system and coating the sensor. The coolant fan may work but it cannot remove enough heat from the rad to make the engine cool off.Try some engine coolant stop leak to see if it will help. This maybe only a temperary fix.Let me know if you need more.MOE

Temperature gage goes up and down

The breather hose should run to the air cleaner housing or intake tube.
Check your radiator cooling fan. If it isn't working the car will run hot at slow speeds or idle then cool down after you get going faster. A quick check would be to turn the AC on and see if the fan comes on. If not try lightly tapping on the cooling fan motor with a wooden broom handle. If it comes on then you have a bad motor.
If the fan comes on with the AC then check to see if the fan comes on after the engine gets hot. If the engine temp doesn't kick it on then the temperature sensor might be bad.
If the fan is ok please post more info on your problem

I replaced the head gasket on my 1987 944 4 cylinder non turbo single cam . The car runs hot if left ilding for more than 10 minutes . If you drive it , it does not over heat . also notice that the second...

the reason that it doesn't overheat when driving is because there is enough air going through the radiator to keep the engine cool, when idling there is no air going through the radiator until the fans are activated ,when this occurs both fans should be working, you have a problem with the one that isn't working,it may be faulty or a loose or disconnected wire could be the problem......hope this helps......cheers.

2002 ford taurus overheats. Just replaced radiator, waterpump, thermostat and heater core. what else can i do to repair. also, ford flushed the system.

About the only thing that you didn't list is the cooling fan. Are you sure that it's working properly? Drive the car until the engine starts to get hot. After awhile you should hear the cooling fan come on. After you have driven the car for a while, park it and open up the hood. If the upper radiator hose is almost too hot to touch, then check to see if the coolant fan is running. If it isn't, then turn the AC switch to "AC MAX". If the fan still doesn't come on, then a malfunction is indicated. Try to locate the fan control relay and swap it with another relay that has the same part number. Use a relay that will allow the engine to run. Allow the engine to reach operating temperature and see if the fan comes on after switching the AC switch to "AC MAX". If the fan now operates, then replace the relay. I hope this is helpful to you. Thank you for trying Fixya.com. Running hotter than normal looks like it started leaking bad under motor now

There is well-established procedure for trouble shouting the over heating.
Does the car overheat in driving mode?
Yes.
Are you losing coolant?
No. Check water pump (including belt) and thermostat.
If yes make a radiator compression test. You might have a bad cylinder head gasket.
The car doesn’t overheat in driving mode, but overheat in idle.
Does the fan runs?
No.
Check the fan assembly for a bad motor, loose fan blades, or bad connector.
Check the codes for a bad temperature sensor.
Check cooling fan relay and fuse.
If this isn’t enough to solve problem, then send the car at dealer for a “check and advice”.

2001 chevy malibu- when car starts cooling fans do not come on but then do

your coolant temp sensor on the engine block is probably faulty, however, keep in mind that if it really isn't all that hot outside they may not need to turn on. Once you activate the A/C the fans come on automatically since they have to cool the condensor...

If your car is not overheating do not worry about it.
