S80 engine surge at idle

2001 S80 - At idle w/o AC the engine rpm repeatedly drops to approx. 500 then surges to 1200. If lights are ON the lights dim at rpm decrease and return to normal at surge. If AC is under load the surge does not occur. If the engine is under only slight load, as at very low throttle position and creep speed, the surge does not occur. Blipping the throttle is useful to avoid undesired surge when leaving stopped position - as at trafic light.
Thanks.

You could have a bad or contaminated Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor. You can get a used one online for less then 100. You can also purchase a can of MAF sensor cleaner at a local auto supplies store and clean it. It located right at the air filter housing.

Most likely the surging is due to a contaminated electronic throttle module (etm). If it is the throttle module Volvo has a 10 year 200,000 mile extended warranty that could cover the problem.

There is also the chance that there is a vacuum line loose and/or leaking. I would take it to the dealer and for a nominal fee they can diagnose the problem.

I have a 1993 talon n/t that is now turbo. i rebuilt the head and now i have a weird idle problem, it will drop to 750-800 and just jump up to 1100-1200 and stay for a few seconds and then drop down again....

sounds like either a battery to body , engine to fuel management wiring, or battery to engine GROUND problem #2 a vacuum leak and a loose alt belt also make sure the throttle cable is not to tight !!!

Faulty injecters might be the problem. Pull a couple off and have someone turn the key to the on position and see if they are spraying properly

My Sienna starts and revs the RPM's up to 2000 then idles at about 1200. It will constantly surge while driving at speeds under 55. Could this be the fuel pressure regulator?

Yes could be... also the engine should only idle at about 600 when warmed up and 1200 on cold start up so get it checked out a any good garage...

Engine surge during warm up.

Try changing your PCV valve make sure the hose is clean and not full of oil. Also check the elbow end that goes to the intake they tend to collapse from oil saturation. Hope this helps.
