RECYCLE THAT OLD CATALYTIC CONVERTER

Sooner or later, most cars will need to have one or more catalytic converters replaced. The old converter off your car or truck can be recycled for cash. Some of the older converters are worth enough to pay for having a new one installed. But most people are not aware of how valuable they are, so they let the muffler shop or repair shop keep the old converter. The muffler shop will recycle the old converters for money that should have gone in your pocket. Personally, I think there should be a law that requires the muffler shops to give the old converters to the customer, or have the customer sign a waiver saying they do not wish to keep the old converter. The waiver should state that the converter can be recycled for cash. And if they waive their right to keep the old converter, the muffler shop should be required to reduce the cost of the new replacement converter by a percentage of the value of the old converter.

Sounds like an aluminum can is rattling in the muffler?

Probably the aluminum heat shield between the muffler and the floor pan is rattling. Against something. Easy fix at muffler shop, should cost less than $50 to repair.

Catilyic converter broke off and jeep quit running

You will need to buy a new one. Your engine needs a cirtain amout of back pressure to run. Have it towed to a muffler shop and fixed. Or you can do it yourself at a lower cost. Here is a web site with some good prices on convertes.

I am in dire need of replacing the exhaust manifold on a 1995 Nissan Pathfinder. I'm not quit sure I have the money to pay someone or trust them to do the job. If at all possible I would like to do it...

By the time you buy the tools needed for the job, you will have spent nearly as much as what they want for labor. It's not an easy job, even for an experienced mechanic. Unless it's something you really want to do, I would advise letting the repair shop handle it. Shop around a little for the best price. Stay away from dealerships. Any auto repair shop or decent muffler shop should be able to handle the job. If you have the catalytic converter replaced, make sure you keep the old one. You can recycle it and recover some of your money. I recently had a converter replaced with a universal type converter for a total cost of $150 parts and labor. I sold the used factory converter at a scrap metal place for $195. Good luck and have a Merry Christmas.

How hard is it to replace a catalytic converter on the 2004 titan

You will either need to buy the direct replacement which will cost a good amount of money (hundreds) or you can buy an aftermarket which you will have to cut out and weld in.
I recently bought an aftermarket catalytic converter for $100 and the muffler shop welded it (and a muffler) for $60.

I would go back immediately to the mechanic and demand that the catalytic converter be replaced at their expense. The converter is needed for not only the vehicle to run properly, but also to pass state inspection. Some state laws insist that the vehicle have the catalytic converter. Midas should have known better, and I would definitely demand to speak to management or someone in corporate to have this remedied. I hope this helps and good luck.

Muffler

Careful. this sounds very high and there are generic cats that any competent (and HONEST) muffler shop can install with a Mazda or generic muffler.
Don't know how labor is in your area but the cat and an adequate muffler together shouldn't cost over ~$200 US. Check with a 'parts' store that doesn't do installation to see what the individual pieces cost 'over the counter.' If you are in the US, check with your local Better Business Bureau website to find an honest shop.
