(P1681) This code came up because the gauge cluster stopped communicating with the PCM. You can look around yourself first. Check for blown fuses. A bad alternator could surge the system. Damaged wire could have caused a short. A related component could be defective and affecting the PCM or Gauge cluster. If you have questions please feel free to write back.

You have a problem with the stepper motor gauge that Chevy used in the 02-06? Avalanche. All the gauges use the same stepper motor. They just go wonky and do all kinds of weird things. I have replaced two on mine already and two more are now acting up. There is a guy selling the motors and the repair for this problem on E-bay.

Like you said, battery may be flat. You can check that with a multimeter.
Next check the alternator. Faulty alternator leads to uncharged battery.

Seems that the fuel pump quit, check for fuel pressure, check for spark in the plugs and the fuel filter.
SOURCE: 2003 BMW 325xi won't start, dashboard and radio go on.
My 2003 325xi died on the highway a few weeks ago, and I thought it was the battery. It turned out to be the alternator, which was an expensive problem to repair. If your battery is new, it could be the alternator, or a problem with the electrical system. I find the BMWs to be too complicated electrically, which often leads to problems! I'd check your alternator...
