SOURCE: when to change timing belt

Maximas had a timig belt until 1994. Some Maximas from 1992-1994 had chains also, but only the VE30DE models. All VG30 models had timing belt. Since 1995 all maximas (A32, A33, A34 the all new A35) have timing chains and the rarely/never fail. In fact in my 12+ years with nissan, I have't seen/replaced single timing chain in a Maxima, so pretty bullet proof setup and I have had few of those cars and have one right now. Awesome cars, by the way, just keep up with the oil changes and it will run forever. One of my Maximas had 245000 miles, when I was selling it and I still see it on the road here and there. BULLET PROOF engines.

There were 2 engines used. The VG30E(GXE version) and the VE30DE(on the 92-94 SE versions). The VG30E has a timing belt and the VE30DE has a timing chain.

The alignment of the sprockets themselves keeps the belt true. If the belt moves out of alignment then one or all the sprockets is worn.Examine and replace.

How do i remove the camshaft sprocket bolt on a 1993 nissan maxima 3.OL?

A cheat that works every time. Disconnect your spark plug leads, fit the socket and breaker bar to the sprocket bolt and rest the end of the bar on the chassis rail or frame (turn the breaker bar and socket on the sprocket bolt as if you're trying to undo the bolt until it makes contact with a part of the car that won't be damaged and maybe rest a rag under it) Turn the ignition key on and off rapidly 1-2 times and the torque from the starter motor will be more than sufficient to undo the bolt.

Broken timing belt on 1993 Nissan Maxima

this is an interference motor, if the timing belt snapped/broke while running. Its possible that you may have internal engine damage(worst case). I suggest having a mechanic check it out before performing the belt replacement. Hopefully this helps
