Yes auto or manual vehicles must have the flex plate (Auto), flywheel (Man) installed in correct position while engine is at top dead centre cylinder 1 firing.
flywheel has notch in it which goes at 6 o Clock when looking at back of engine & flex plate has notch go at 12 o clock.

in the automatic isuzu trooper 4jx1 they have also - eb6812e9-6489-487f-8b97-a05e38d54fb4.png

The ECU will be fine with a engine rebuild but the 4JX takes a bit longer to start if all the injector oil paths are empty - can be up to 5 or 6 mins of 20 second cranking bursts.
Also if you rebuilt due to diesel in the oil from bad injectors the control valve for the injector oil pressure may be faulty so it wont start.

Sorry for the severe delay.
I am personally going back to answer your unanswered question.
I do not know if you still need the answer, but I am going to answer it in case you still do.

Click on the following direct Link. It has the Timing Belt Diagrams and Photos with Marks for the Camshaft and Crankshaft that you will need. It also has numerous other helpful diagrams, instructions and photo's for use.

Again my apologies...

SOURCE: Isuzu Big Horn (Trooper) 4JX1 engine.... Vehicle

Sends a signal related to the rail pressure as a voltage to the ECM. 3 wire connector :

  • Red : 5V (Feeds from ECM connector J1-4) Shared with MAP sensor, EGR pressure sensor and accellerator position sensor.(compare values from these sensors and ECM connector)
  • Black : Ground (Feeds from ECM J2-22) Shared with the same sensors mentioned above
  • White : Signal feeds to ECM connector J2-22
Low pressure will set P1194 error code. Oil rail pressure should be more than 3MPa when cranking

Also check Engine coolant temp sensor and wiring. Engine coolant to manifold temp should not differ by more than 5 deg C either way after 8 hours of no operation. I have found the same symptom on these diesels with fuel supply problems. Operate the priming pump (on top of the fuel filter) until it becomes diffycult to push down before starting or checking anything else.

Testimonial: "Thanks Suzman, We actually managed to get it going....The only problem remaining is a rough idle until its warmed up and sometimes stalls until warm. "

SOURCE: 4jx1 camshaft marks on isuzu trooper 2001 3,0 dohc

the timming gear that the belt runs on has a mark (V cut in gear) to rear cover at about 12 o clock and crank pulley has timming mark for top dead centre, both cams have cut outs in rear that a special tool (camshaft stopper 5-8840-2592-0) locks into to hold cams in correct position, but can do without this, if the cam belt gear is off, the keyway should be at 12 o clock. the marks in the camshaft gears (dots) is for assembly of sissor gears to solid gears on camshafts that run together and they should match up only if you had this appart.

stevenhurc_12.jpg no.1 is timming mark

stevenhurc_13.jpgthis is the locking plate tool

Isuzu trooper 2004 model 4jx1 engine what was the fly wheel marks if it was at tdc

if flywheel is fitted in correct position the timing mark on the front top cambelt gear is at 12 O clock and with starter motor removed you will see 3 lines stamped in the interuptor ring that is bolted to the rear of the flywheel if manual on early builds, also there is a notch in flywheel which you can see if gearbox is out this goes at 6 O clock

Timing mark's on isuzu trooper 3.0 td . changed head gasket now engine turn's over as if no compression .

The cam pulley notch goes in line with the mark on the front cam bearing cap and the crankshaft pulley goes at 12 o'clock - its got a tiny mark on the back lip that lines up with the mark on the cover .

Did you take the cams off in one lump or split them ? if you did come back on here for how to time them up .

Fly wheel problem on a jeep

if its a 4JX1 diesel, yes it goes in 1 spot yet it can be bolted up in every location
put crank pulley timing mark to TDC can also check by removing cam belt top cover and check timing mark aligned up with mark at 12 O clock then flywheel has small notch in edge that must go at 6 O clock (facing down) look closely it is hard to see due to flywheel sunk into back of block.
