I'm not sure what you are writing. Does the gear shift selector move but without any resistance? If so, this could be a broken shift cable. If not, the transmission could have lost power and is in need of some type of repair. I would like to provide you with more information but I need more specific details about your SUV, warning lights, maintenance history, recent repairs or engine codes. Did this failure happen out of the blue or get progressively worse over time? Let me know if you can think of anything else. Good Luck.
SOURCE: Gear shift knob
The shifter knobs on these vehicles is installed very very tightly.
I have never been able to remove one without ruining it by tearing the cover, which should not be a big issue since you're replacing it.
The knob threads on like a nut would (lefty-loosy, righty-tighty). I use a large set of channel-lock pliers and they are still tough to break loose.
Good luck and I hope that this is helpful!

You need to check the linkage. Under the car, the section that connects the gear shift stick to the transmission rods.

i would try to get down to the linkage adjustment and see if maybe it is not adjusted properly or if it jumped out of alignment. Place the transmission in park and the selector in park after loosening nut and then tighten down the nut.

sounds like you may need a new clutch here, u can try drainning the trans and refilling with new fluid, this helps.

Try driving backwards then shift into 4-wheel drive after you stop
