2005 grand marquis will not shift out of park

More then likely a problem with the shift interlock system . Stepping on the brake pedal , do the brake light's light up ? The shift interlock system is a safety system that won't allow the gear selector to be moved out of park unless driver is pushing the brake pedal . Part's involved - brake switch , inlock solenoid , wiring etc.... May also have electronic module involved , BCM - body control module .

  • when the ignition switch lock cylinder is in the FIRST position.
  • with the ignition switch lock cylinder in the RUN position and the brake pedal actuated.

I can not shift out of the parking position in my 2002 Ford Thunderbird.

Safety system - shift interlock . Won't let driver move gear selector unless foot is pushing on the brake pedal . part's involved (FEM) front electronic module , brake switch .

Park neutral safety switch could be bad , also the shift interlock safety system .
Shift Interlock System A brake/shifter interlock system consists of the following:
  • ignition switch (11572)
  • brake pedal stoplight switch (13480)
  • brake shift interlock module
  • brake shift interlock solenoid assembly (attached to key interlock assembly)
  • necessary wiring
On floor-shift vehicles, the ignition/shifter interlock cable (3F719):
  • locks the floor shift transaxle range selector lever in the PARK position when the ignition switch is in the LOCK position.
  • requires the floor shift transaxle range selector lever to be in the PARK position to turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position.

Is voltage greater than 10 volts?
Yes No GO to A4 . SERVICE Circuit 1003 (GY/Y) wire between interior fuse panel and shift-lock actuator. A4 CHECK POWER SUPPLY FROM FUSE 28 (15A)
  • Turn ignition switch OFF.
  • Disconnect connector C2016.

Shift Interlock System
The shift interlock system prevents shifting from PARK unless the brake pedal is depressed. The shift interlock system consists of a shift lock actuator mounted on the selector lever. If the ignition switch is in the RUN position, the shift lock actuator is disabled when the brake pedal is depressed.
If the selector lever will not move out of PARK with the key in the ON position and the brake pedal depressed, it will need to be unlocked manually.

Brake Shift Interlock Actuator - Column Shift Removal and Installation
  1. Set the parking brake.
  1. Remove the steering column shrouds.
  1. Turn the ignition to the accessory position and apply the brake or actuate the brake shift interlock actuator (BSIA) override.
  1. Put the selector lever into the NEUTRAL position.
  1. Disconnect the BSIA electrical connector.
  1. Remove the BSIA screw.
  1. Gently pry the clip up and remove the BSIA.
  1. NOTE: During installation, verify that the BSIA override has been activated and the slider is fully rearward. Before rotating the selector lever from NEUTRAL into PARK, align the selector lever tab into the BSIA. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Maybe you blew solid state module. There is a manual bypass.

Shift Interlock System A shift interlock mechanism prevents shifting the transaxle out of the PARK position unless the brake pedal (2455) is applied. The shift lock actuator is energized when the ignition switch is turned to the RUN position.
  • This locks the shifter in the PARK position.
  • When the brake pedal is applied and the stoplight switch (13480) is activated, the shift lock actuator is deactivated and the shifter can be moved out of the PARK position.

1997 ford truck cannot get it out of park. Replaced brake light switch assembly.

The shift interlock system prevents the shifting from PARK unless the brake pedal (2455) is depressed. The shift interlock system consists of a shift lock actuator (3Z719) mounted at the base of the steering column tube (3514). If the ignition switch (11572) is in the RUN position, the shift lock actuator is continually on unless the brake pedal is depressed. The shift lock actuator is the logical culprit. Check to see if it's getting voltage when the brake pedal is depressed. If yes: the unit is either faulty, weak or stuck. I can provide wire numbers and colors if necessary. I may need the engine size and Trans. code found on drivers door sticker. Good luck! Aoogha
