Can an Alternator be washed out ?

Can anyone use WD 40 to clean an Alternator that has oil or power steering fluid that got into it after the Alternator has been removed from the vehicle. I don't think WD 40 will conduct electricity, is this correct ? Thank you

A man that rebuilds alternators told me to use Gunk & wash out with a water hose.

Your way will probably work too.

Contact cleaner is the best thing to use or rubbing alcohol will degrease and remove oil residue .

Testimonial: "Do you thik I could put some alcohol in a pump spray bottle & spray it into the alternator to was it out without disassembling it?"

  • sherman north Dec 25, 2018

I had a typo in the last comment, it should have read : Do you think I could put some alcohol into a pump spray bottle to spray into it without disassembling the alternator ?

  • sherman north Dec 25, 2018

And allow the alcohol to dry thoroughly before installing the alternator.

youre leaking steering box is most likely an easy fix, the leak can be rectified by changing the lower shaft seal but this means removal of the pitman arm. you can remove the seal and get it matched up at any industrial supplier

SOURCE: my power steering went heavy

hi Jo,the power steering is powered by the fanbelt and if its slipping will cause it to go heavy but a light would come up on the dash to tell you the alternator was not charging.so if not the belt,it could be the electrics for the pwr steering need looking into, this is easier to get on the dealers diagnostic computer which will show up the exact fault.and would save any guesswork.

I have a 01 Chevy impala just had the head gasket replaced, new water pump, new thermostat and oil ffilter and still have a ticking noise wat can I do to fix this problem?

could be coming from one of the other belt driven components, alternator,a/c ,power steering pump etc , try spraying WD 40 onto the belts one by one to see if the noise goes if it does change the belt, you can also use french chalk , a fine chalk dust , keep me posted if you wish

How to change power steering presure hose

Very simple, the hose disconnects simply by loosening the bolt at the end of the hose. You may need to spray some WD-40 first, but once the bolt is loose, be careful as power steering fluid will leak.

1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee squeaking and power steering

It very well could be the pawer steering pump. But to isolate the squeking sound, take that can of wd-40 and find the idler pully and tensior pully. Spray the bearing area of both pulleys. If your bearing in those pulleys are going bad then it will make that noise. If the wd-40 quits the noise at one of those tow pulleys then you know which one to replace. If its does not, then start looking to replace the powersteering pump. I take it you have checked the power steering fluid levels and they are ok?? Also, you stated that the noise started after you bought the alternator, then try a new alternator. It might of just been a faulty alternator. Happens all the time. One last inexpensive tip is replacing all belts with new. Belts get glazed over and dirty and cause noise too. One last question. Did you make sure the belts were tight enough? Just a little variance in the belt tension can make the difference.

Fluid behind tires

you have to check the consistency of the fluid. IT can either be from the breaks, power steering (for the front wheels), or engine oil (again for front wheels. I suggest to do some cleaning underneath. Wash the whole area where you see the oil cleaned out. Once cleaned you should have an idea where exactly the oil came from once it seeps out and can accurately have it fixed.

Steering hard /loosing pwer at 40-55mph

Take the car in for a new serpentine belt and tensioner right away before you destroy the engine. The alternator, power steering pump and waterpump are not turning right now because the belt has come off. The battery will die soon because it is not charging, and the engine will overheat and perform it's own little rendition of the china syndrome. When the red warning lights in the dash come on, it generally means; park it unless you're being shot at.

Audi power steering pump location

Before you replace the pump, check the filter located inside the oil tank. This filter cleans the oil before going to pump. REMEMBER that Audi uses a special oil!!! Not your normal power steering fluid! Mixing them could cause damage to the entire system!
