E36 BMW 318I CENTRAL LOCKING A. I bought a 2nd hand 1995 BMW 318I in South Africa. Good condition. No owner?s manual. Everything worked ok for a few months. Then the batteries of the remote key transmitter (3 button) for the central locking/alarm (OEM EWS 2) was getting flat and it starts to open and close intermittently. When the car was lock with the window open the remote could not unlock the car. I opened the door trough the window and the alarm went off and the red light in front of the gear lever starts flashing. I could not stop the alarm with the remote (probably flat batteries) and without the proper procedure how to disarm it I disconnect the battery of the car. After reconnecting the battery and changing key transmitter batteries (voltage ok) and making sure the remotes are transmitting (Led flashing) the central locking does not work. B. The normal procedure (boot, door, switch x5 etc) does not work because I cannot get the central locking/alarm in learning mode. Led light up and alarm chirp once etc. 1. What is the procedure to reset the central locking system of my mistake? 2. What is the procedure to synchronize the remote with the car system if the remote batteries are flat of the spare key? 3. How can I test if a remote is transmitting? Johnz1313 [email protected]

Hi Johnz, I am reposting the programming instructions I found in the hopes that they can get you out of your jam - these instructions are copied from programcarremotes.com (the link goes to the specific page for BMW 3 series. They posted several different methods - I hope one of them works for you!

S & M Switches in 318i 1996 MBW

In S and E modes your car will start in 1st gear and progress up to which ever gear you have the shifter in, 2, 3, 4(D).
In M mode the transmission STARTS in which ever gear you have selected. If you have the gear shift in 2nd, the car will start in 2nd and STAY in 2nd until you change it. It will not shift up to 3rd or ever down into 1st.

This as someone above stated is for adverse weather driving where low gears have too much torque for the traction offered by the road surface.

ALSO, this is NOT a manual setting. This should never be used for "performance" driving unless you are looking to destroy your auto tranny in a hurry. It is strictly for poor traction conditions.

Central locking

hi there

i had a major problem with my central locking. it would lock with my key but then wouldnt open. the only way i could get in the car was by manually oopeing the driver door but that still meant the the rest of the doors were locked. I managed to buy a relay from ebay and open up my general module . thats the white box thst sits behind uyour fuse box in the glove compartment. it a tricky job as the relays are soldered on and it took approx 30 mins to remove each and replace it.

I have had no problem since
