I get a battery light on my 2005 PT Cruiser (2.4L turbo). Its been intermittently coming on and then it started clicking on attempted start up like the batter was dead. While waiting for a jump, i tried again and it started right up...not sluggish like a low charge on the battery. Eventually the battery light came on and stayed on and the car starts and runs horribly. Like not all cylinders are firing. Little to no power when running, can idle to move. If I press the gas to much it will stall or close to stall. In looking at info on various websites, it appears the ASD relay could be the culprit except no mention of battery light in those cases for the most part.

Whats the battery voltage when you turn the key on or try to crank it? Have you checked to make sure the terminals are clean?
An almost dead battery will still read 12 volts until there is a load on it. Then you will see the voltage drop to almost nothing. Checking the battery voltage with the key on or with the headlights on will give you a better picture of the health of the battery. Since it starts and runs with a jump I would say a new batter is in your future.

Hi Barbra:
1) I'd be suspicious of a bad head gasket with a possible leak between a cylinder and the water jacket.
If fumes smell like coolant that would be a confirming hint.
Check the oil (dipstick) and see if it has a milky colour or if there is any water visible. If the head gasket problem is only as in 1) above, it should be just oil.
- Temporary fix attempt????? - add aluminum sealant to coolant.
- Permanaent fix (expensive) - Off to the repair shop for a new head gasket.
Hope this helps.
