01 frontier brake issue. thinking abs problem

Brakes work and it drives fine but the pedal gets hard and can hear the abs "clicking" from the front end under the dash. bad sensors? abs control module?

A key question is whether the power brake assist is normal while driving. If it isn't, you may have to depress the brake pedal 'hard enough' to actuate the ABS system. Do you notice typical ABS modulation of the brakes while the pedal is 'hard'?

Personally I'd think any fault with the ABS itself would throw a code, either setting the ABS light on the dash or providing something in the OBD-II scan. Have you observed any codes resulting from, say, a free scan at AutoZone?

Brakes are actually a legal issue with your car. Do not attempt to repair brakes by yourself, especially systems with abs. If you have an accident caused by bad brakes and it is found out that the brakes were repaired by an unlicensed technician (such as yourself), your insurance may not cover you, and you may be liable. I know they're expensive to repair, but we're talking about a $20,000+ machine (your car), so spend the money to make sure you can stop that $20,000 tank if you have to an emergency, much less just everyday driving!

Hi, i found where is the problem and its your sensor near the brake of each wheel you must use a hammer and bang (knock) the sensor of each wheel just a little not to hard and see what happening after each wheel. I think its the position of the sensor move every 3 or 6 month and need to be replace because of the dirt in the break.

This work for my nissan altima 2004 perfectly at no cost

sounds like what is happening is one of your wheel speed sensors is dropping out when you slow down and this is triggering abs unit. it would not cut abs light on because system thinks one wheel is locking up just like when you are on ice. need to read data while driving and see what is going on when it activates.

SOURCE: '98 Windstar ABS and traction control lights after getting brakes done

Prior to the brakes being replaced you more than likely had metal to metal contact which can throw metal shavings on the ABS wheel sensors. This metal shavings stick to the road grime on the wheel sensors showing the ABS computer a false reading making the ABS light come on. On Ford Windstars, the ABS light and the traction control light are on the same circuit. A simple (and cheap) fix is to pull the ABS wheel sensors and clean them with brake cleaner or throttle body cleaner. Make sure you dry them well and reinstall. On the Windstar there is one bold holding the sensors to the back of the wheels. I recommend you spray some WD40 on the bold and wait about 10 minutes before removing.
If this doesn't fix the ABS light and brakes, you can have the ABS system diagnosed at a shop for about an hour labor. (Usally about $100)
I have fixed many of these type of problems just by cleaning the ABS wheel sensors. Good luck.

The red brake light is the key here. That usually indicateds a hydraulic problem. Check you fluid level in master cylinder and see if it is low. Also the level indicator sensor there in the master cylinder maybe sticking or corrioded. If ABS sees the red brake light it will shut off and turn on the ABS light,also traction control would be disabled as well.

Manual

WARNING: Brake fluid contains polyglycol ethers and polyglycols. Avoid contact with eyes. Wash hands thoroughly after handling. If brake fluid contacts eyes, flush eyes with running water for 15 minutes. Get medical attention if irritation persists. If taken internally, drink water and induce vomiting. Get medical attention immediately.

CAUTION: Do not allow the brake master cylinder reservoir to run dry during the bleeding operation. Keep the brake master cylinder reservoir filled with the specified brake fluid. Never reuse the brake fluid that has been drained from the hydraulic system.

CAUTION: Brake fluid is harmful to painted and plastic surface's. If brake fluid is spilled onto a painted or plastic surface, immediately wash it with water.

NOTE: When any part of the hydraulic system has been disconnected for repair or installation of new components, air can get into the system and cause spongy brake pedal action. This requires bleeding of the hydraulic system after it has been correctly connected. The hydraulic system can be bled manually or with pressure bleeding equipment.

  1. Clean all dirt from and remove the brake master cylinder filler cap and fill the brake master cylinder reservoir with the specified brake fluid.

  2. Place a box end wrench on the RH rear bleeder screw. Attach a rubber drain tube to the RH rear bleeder screw and submerge the free end of the tube in a container partially filled with clean brake fluid.
  3. Have an assistant pump the brake pedal and then hold firm pressure on the brake pedal.
  4. Loosen the RH rear bleeder screw until a stream of brake fluid comes out. While the assistant maintains pressure on the brake pedal, tighten the RH rear bleeder screw.
    • Repeat until clear, bubble-free fluid comes out.
    • Refill the brake master cylinder reservoir as necessary.
  1. Tighten the RH rear bleeder screw.
  2. Repeat Steps 2, 3, 4 and 5 for the LH rear bleeder screw.
  3. Place a box end wrench on the RH front disc brake caliper bleeder screw. Attach a rubber drain tube to the RH front disc brake caliper bleeder screw, and submerge the free end of the tube in a container partially filled with clean brake fluid.
  4. Have an assistant pump the brake pedal and then hold firm pressure on the brake pedal.
  5. Loosen the RH front disc brake caliper bleeder screw until a stream of brake fluid comes out.

Vacuum brake booster toyota sequoia 1984. Brake Dealer completed diagnostic test showing codes C1223,1247,and 1310. Conclusion the booster needs replacement. Must I? (about $1,000). Safety issue???


Toyota Sequoia's had a lot of problems abs wise> #1 clear codes with a factory software scanner. then drive it to see what returns. I can not see a brake booster setting 3 codes that are ABS/VSC problems #2 how does the brake pedal feel If it is high and hard pedal then the booster is bad if the engine speeds rise as pedal is depress and you hear escaping air the booster is bad. #3 ABS/VSC are supplemental systems to the normal braking soit will take longer to stop and a possible skid could occur. but you will stop leave more traveling space you should be fine.

Binding on front brakes


CAR BRAKE PROBLEMS



It can be issue with master cylinder or the problem is there is still some air there in the system that has to be bleed. Or else the parts replaced are not aligned properly/.I suggest everything back.

The brakepetal pusis bak when i stepp on the brake and wiberates. Sometimes it gets wery hard to brake.


It can be issue with master cylinder or the problem is there is still some air there in the system that has to be bleed. Or else the parts replaced are not aligned properly/.I suggest everything back.

Under the hood there should be a fuse box, it's going to be one of the big fuses, had the same problem, 01 Tahoe. Found out it was a front bearing assembly. I replaced and it works fine now. Be carful as you will have no abs once fuse is pulled and FYI the abs light and break light will stay on as well. Good luck

ABS light and brake light stay on modt of the time. Brake pedal hard to push on occasion then releases and works fine.


i am guessing the truck is a 4 wheel drive... if that is the case, check your front wheel bearings. most vehicles that now use a hub and bearing assembly with built in ABS are common issues and easy repairs on MOST VEHICLES.

Bleed right rear,left rear, right front, left front in that order to be sure of good bleed but the brake booster makes it easy to push pedal. Make sure of no leaks from master cylinder. Otherwise brake hoses being soft will also hurt baking quickly.

Have you checked the hardware on the disc brakes all the way around, as well as checking the rear pads? Wore out hardware could cause you to require more pressure to get the pads to move, as well as low brakes on the rear. Your braking system sends more pressure to the front of the vehicle because it requires more pressure up there. Less pressure on the rear can cause this to happen. I'm willing to bet the problem from the pedal is coming from the rear brakes somewhere and not the front. The last possibility that I can think if is a problem in the ABS solonoids, they might not be opening up all the way causing you to require more pressure.
